I'm sure I have created a horrendous lean condition and my motor will melt down before I get to the end of the block, but at least it will sound good until then. Hopefully it will last 500 miles until my next service and I can throw in my new race ECM and get the TPS reset at that time.

What I did: Took the muffler off, moved the baffle control to the wide open position, drilled a hole and put a SS sheet metal screw in it to hold it in position and re-installed the muffler. Low and behold, it sounds like a Harley! I won't be setting off car alarms, but at least you can tell what kind of heart propels my beast.

I know I haven't saved any weight. I may or may not have lost some low end power but I couldn't tell in my little three mile test ride. Basically, between the new sound and my new black plastics, I'm very pleased. (Spankin' my coworker and his Monster on some twisties Monday is just an added bonus!)

Probably won't run too lean, but you will see a drop in low end grunt. The active exhaust servo open on WOT to allow the engine to breath more efficiently. It stays closed to allow low to mid range torque to translate to the rear wheel. Back pressure is always good for lower RPM power. When you get the race ECM, the active exhaust feature is no longer used. Actually, the active exhaust performs better than the race can, but the race can get you the sound most people are looking for.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for confirming my true thoughts on the lean condition. I was actually just throwing an option out for anyone who thinks this bike has plenty of power "as is" and just wants a little more sound but doesn't have the money for an after market pipe or factory race pipe. I intend to go aftermarket at some point, but I'm still trying to make up my mind which one to go with.

Where is the baffle control at? Did it make it any louder than stock?

It's on your next bike, the XB12S...

So that wouldn't work for my 9?

Nope, the 9 doesn't have the interactive exhaust system.

BuellXB9S,

I have a 12 muffler on my 9 now (Active valve is not active). When I pinned the valve open I got a very nice sound, not to load not to quiet. Only problem is the exhaust is too "open" like that and you lose a lot of low end, much more than you would on the 12 I'm sure. It's really too bad there is no way to get that valve working on a 9 because with the Valve closed it works (and sounds) just like the stock 9 muffler. With the valve open it is very soggy on the bottom but just screams on top. My SOTP (seat o the pants) dyno says 5 more HP maybe more. It almost seems like the active exhaust would make even more difference on the 9 than the 12. But, you would have to get the ECM, actuator, cable, and airbox cover from a 12 just to get started, then you may need to remap the ECM to get it to work on the 9.

Anywho, if your interested in a loader muffler I may have something for you. Shot me an e-mail and I'll explain.

I put the Race Kit on to get ride of the valve. I determined it was there mostly for noise abatement, not low end power.

With the rack kit installed, my bike has a much BETTER low end. Smoother, and it can lug down to 2000 rpm smoothly. Getting rid of the exhaust servo was the best thing I've done to my Ulysses.

Of course, I added the Race ECM at the same time, and I'm sure it's richened up in the bottom end to compensate. Don't know how the bike would run with just she servo open on the stock ECM.

I have a similar feeling about the servo valve. I actually think it is there to ADD power....at the top end. They need all that muffler to pass noise testing at low and medium RPM but must be able to slip through at higher RPM's with a mostly straight through design. At any rate, I'll have my race ECM installed and TPS reset in a little over a week. I'll post any noticeable improvements.

Has anyone read in the service manuel that the muffler clamps should be replaced when installing a new muffler? Especially the first one (the big one).

My understanding is that the clamps weaken and can break causing all kinds of problems.

This is true, the front torca clamp is a one time use fastener, and must be replaced if removing the muffler.

how many of you that have swapped out mufflers (race kit, drummer, odie, etc) actually put new clamps on and how many put the originals back on.

my stock muffler is only six months old and is rusting all over, so even if i don't swap to a new pipe i will need to take it off and remove the rust and paint it.

I have swapped pipes twice and used the same clamps each time. You can use the same clamps as long as you don't over tighten them. I am pretty sure that's what breaks them.

I'd never tell anyone not to replace them, but I didn't replace mine. They were fine and decently new, so I reused them. I've checked them for looseness and they are tight as a drum. No issues.

i had the race kit put on. used the same clamps. also took them and the muffler off to clean up/sand some rust off... repainted the race kit muffler with BBQ grill black spray paint... looks much cleaner!!! also painted a skull on the bottom (for those stunting moments)

The clamps are still alive and doing well!

Sheldon, amazing, you mention two what were the other two? Cooler leak requires a twist of a wrench (you knew that and probably have already done that).

I don't know what to tell you. I haven't had any issues with mine other than the servo motor cycling with the engine cut off switch turned off. The race kit corrected that issue.

Backpressure in an exhaust is never beneficial to performance;it will always hinder performance. The good thing that backpressure in an exhaust tract was good for was to prevent overheating of exhaust valves/seats. That is no longer much if any of a concern on OEM vehicles.

Buell's ECM/servo controlled interactive exhaust valve provides the engine with two different geometric configurations of exhaust tract. The valve open configuration is optimized for best low and high rpm running, where the valve-closed configuration provides an optimum geometry for mid-range running. Other factors besides rpm also affect when and how the valve opens if I recall correctly.

Sheldon, I really like the BMeer, A real different ride. It's very fast, handles well.

With the low seat in the low position the seating height is about the same as the Buell with the street fighter seat.

A big bike feel weighing only 570 lbs. Heated grips, cruise control, no heated seat.

Six speed gear box with 5th and 6th being over drives.

It's not the bike for everyone, It will work for me for a while.

How are you guys breaking the stainless straps?? I have changed exhausts about 4 times since winter and have never had a problem. They are t-bolt clamps, all they are designed to do is hold the pipe on. Just snug then down dont try to crush the muffler.
