Hey guys, I seem to have misplaced my service manual. Does anyone know off hand what the drive belt tension in an 04 XB12r is supposed to be? |

I don't have the SM handy, but I don't remember the belt having a torque spec. From what I recall you just torque the tensioner pulley to spec, and then torque the rear axle to the proper spec and method and it should be good to go, please correct me if I am mistaken. The loosening or tightening of the rear axle loosens or tightens the belt. (Message edited by sik_s on April 11, 2006) |

I mean belt tension, like how much deflection in the belt. Mine is looking a little sloppy. |

there isnt, but up until '05, (I think) The belts did have have a wear spec, and needed to be replaced when they stretch out. I just need to know at what deflection the belt is no good. Mine seems a bit floppy, thats all. To be pefectly honest Ive never even checked it, im pretty sure youre supposed to check it at 10k. But like I said, ive misplaced my service manual. |

I have the SM right in front of me and there is no play measurement. In Table 1-7 on page 1-27 there is a section titled "Potential Limits to Belt Drive Service Life" within this section there is a section titled "Apparent belt stretch". I will list roughly what it says here. "worn sprocket = inspect/replace sprocket" "debris in sprocket = clean and protect drive or inspect for damaged or missing guards" "idler bearing failure = replace idler assembly" "aggressive riding/hard use= riding practice/operator choice" "exposure to oils, solvents, harsh chemicals= eliminate or control exposure or clean and protect drive" So with that said, ensure the rear axle is properly installed as per the SM then maybe replace the idler assembly if the belt has low miles on it. The only other thing mentioned in the section is that the drive belt and idler pulley assembly need to be replaced every 25,000 miles. (Message edited by sik_s on April 12, 2006) |

Under the entire "Drive Belt" section the only measurement of play is for the idler pulley. It says "check for signs of uneven wear. Excessive lateral side play of 0.020 in. (0.5 mm) or roughness indicates worn bearing. Replace idler pulley as an assembly" |

Kevlar drive belts don't stretch. If anything, the older they get, the TIGHTER they get. It's not that the kevlar shrinks, but the rubber on the inside circumference swells, tightening up the belt. If your belt is loose, there's something else going on. |

Its not that its loose, like I said, I have nothing to compare it to. If It were a Harley I would say its way too loose. But its not a Harley, so I figured I would ask. |

I'd recommend loosening the axle ensuring the idler pulley doesn't have more play than previously posted, loosen and retorque the idler pulley assembly and then retorque the rear axle as per the SM procedure. How many miles do the belt and idler pulley assembly have on them? |
