What's the easiest way to add a right side air scoop? Is there any reason not to? I'd like to buy the mirror image of the left side and bolt it on (the engine and exhaust is 100% stock). I don't need high style, but I'd like them to match.

I do think there may be a drawback to adding the scoop. I believe the right side scoop allows air flow from the fan to act on both the front and rear cylinders ducting the air flow and forcing air to draw across both the front and rear when the fan kicks on. Without it I don't think the front benefits from the fan. I believe the reverse is true when in motion and the air is just naturally forced through this path. Again, it forces cool air across both cylinders but in this case it ensures some flow to the rear cylinder which otherwise would not have received as much cool air. Any additional scoop would have to have some sort of ducting in place like this for it to be effective. The reason the fan runs less with the aftermarket right side scoops in place is because it is ducting cool air to the sensor fooling the system. I think Buell did their home work on this one. What do your guys think?

I guess it depends on who you want to believe, the factory engineers who spend countless hours designing and testing and go back to design some more and produce these wonderful XB bikes... or some guessing by somebody that this oughta be "better" for your bike because it happens to make sense to him/her.

Not to put down anyone, but if it's a good idea, Buell probably have it either build-in or provide factory "upgrades" for it, I think.

At the end of the day, you DO trust the people who designed and made your bike, right?

yeah, i trust them, but the bike looks unbalanced, that is why i bought one. it wont hurt it, cuz if it was a problem that the bike would run to cool with another airscoop on it, then the bike would not run in cold weather, so then they could only sell it in warm climates. but since the bike runs in freezing weather as seen in some pics and vids, and in some hot a$$ days on the bay bridge in san francisco, i would not worry about it at all.

The reason the fan runs less with the aftermarket right side scoops in place is because it is ducting cool air to the sensor fooling the system.

The sensor is screwed deep into the rear cylinder head and surrounded by the metal of the rocker covers etc. If the sensor is running cooler because of the aftermarket scoop then it follows that the cylinder head is also running cooler. Hence the scoop works.

The initial reason for making these scoops was for cosmetic reasons and to balance the look of the bike. The fact that the fan runs less was an added bonus : )

That would be, uh, somewhat inaccurate.

At best.

The design and production of an item like a motorcycle must involve a great many compromises in order to deliver the product at a price that is competitive in the marketplace.

If one is will to spend more money, there are limitless ways in which one can improve one's motorcycle, functionally or aesthetically.

Personally, I have some 40 modifications to my bike, some for looks, most for functional reasons. A look around the parking lot at any gathering of real Buell enthusiasts, such as the March Badness in Georgia, would show that almost none of the "hard men" are riding stock bicycles.

Web sites like our sponsors, American Sports Bike , Special OPS, Drummer, Trojan-Horse or Hillbilly-Motors Motors show that there is a lively consumer demand for these products. Are all these customers misguided?

I think not.

While we are on the subject (kind of) what's the best paint and prep to use on the fiberglass right side scoop that has held up for those who have installed it?

I have the scoop from Trojan, and it's closest to a "mirror" of the left scoop that I've seen.

Believe it or not, I used SEM Bumper Black flat black rattle can paint. It matches perfectly, and has not bubbled due to heat nor chipped.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to check around the company as to why this seemingly good, and likely low-cost, idea has not been implemented. Certainly no one believes the stock "lollipop" mirrors cannot be improved upon, yet the give us the same old garbage mirrors year after year...

And, where did you get the drive belt, idler pulley tensioner?
Pretty sharp!
