I think I saw somewhere that there is a metal gasket for the primary cover that can be reused and seals better than the stock one. Anyone have info on this? Also I don't have the SM in front of me right now, but to take off the primary cover, is it just unscrewing all the bolts, and it pops off? Or do you have to pull the shifter linkages and replace a seal for that too? Of course the fluid would have to be drained too, but any help is appreciated. Thanks.

The -89B GASKET,clutch cover(PRIMARY) for the SPORTSTER engine is so good that "i" have reused one 4 time before replacing it ...

The quality of the XB gasket should be just as good ...

Is the -89b gasket stock/aftermarket?

Pull the shifter and back the primary chain tensioner bolt all the way down (out of the case).

If you take a wrap of Scotch tape around the splines on the shifter shaft you can probably save the seal there. I've had mine off a couple of times and its not leaking yet.

You may need a puller to get the shifter off, if you try to expand it open by prying in the slot it might break.

A puller? Do you have a part number for this or do one of the sponsors sell this? I just ordered the metal gasket and spline seal from al's along with the locking plate to retorque my primary nut.

Is not the correct gasket for a XB.

And I believe that you are talking about different gaskets.
He is going to remove the entire primary cover, not just the inspection cover.

You will need a new gasket.

The puller is not a big thing, one of those cheap stamped battery cable or steering wheel type things will be enough.

I didn't have to use one on mine, I hit the clamping area with a shot of PB Blaster and pulled on the shifter with a rocking motion and it came right off.

I mentioned the puller because I remember reading about it in the SM. Or reading here that the puller was the alternative to trying to pry the shifter open and breaking it. That is a fairly robust looking piece but apparently it breaks easily.
