Well, I managed to get the funky cables working (a wiggle here - a giggle there), and my craptop was now communicating with the bike.

I reset the TPS with the race ECM installed - the tps position after setting the idle ended up being 4.8 - 5.1 to keep the idle at 1050... anything higher, and the bike was revving in the 1100's.

With the stock ECM, it read 5.3 for the TPS - perhaps it's a mixture thing...??? Now, do I have to reset the AFV, and if so, how often should this be conducted? This one, I don't mind, as it's a quick click to get it done...

Just reset the AFV after the TPS reset.

You say that the TPS is at 4.8-5.1 when the idle is at 1050? The reason I ask is that you should set the TPS at 5.1 then the idle should be adjusted to 1050. So the TPS reading will raise with the idle adjustment.

Uh, ya...SF101 is right. Your TPS should read somewhere between 6.6 and 6.8 if your idle is adjusted after your TPS reset. You want to reset your AFV if you have changed or uploaded a new map, usually...unless you are having other problems.

I had originally adjusted the tps to 5.1, but even after warm up, the idle was a little high. I had to turn it down a bit to keep it out of the 1100's.

I suppose I could reset it again - Everything was by the numbers, according to guide written by Al... maybe the combination I'm running just needs those numbers...

I'll try the whole thing again tomorrow, and reset the AFV at the same time...

Stormtrooper - Make sure the throttle stop screw is backed all the way off before performing the reset. You should have to adjust it "up" after warm-up to get 1050rpm.

This may be a stupid question, but where is the "AFV Button" on the screen?

I downloaded version 2.78G from Technoresearch after getting version 2.71, or so, from Daves. I'm confused as h*ll. The two versions don't seem to be in the same universe.

When I'm ready to do the reset, I may have to contact Chad, or some other guru, & get "walked" through the process. Al's write-up seems both confusing & "all over the place" to my simple old engineers mind. Remember, I got a BS & a masters plus a Steel Mill Engineer journeyman book with a "slip stick." Micre$oft I understand, this stuff I don't.

Excuse me sir, but if the resetting the AFV and the TPS after installing an ECM is such a BFD on an XB, shouldn't we keep it on the QT? Because if it leaks out to the VC, you could become an MIA, and we'd all be on KP.

What is the use of resetting the AFV by the way? I did it after resetting my TPS but don't know why and what it does. Should it be done regularly?

I've never reset my AFV. Just done a TPS.

It's actually pretty easy. Goes like this:

1) Back the idle screw out far enough that the throttle "sticks" when shut (you should feel it "pop" a little when it unsticks)

2) Force the throttle closed and make sure it is "stuck"

3) Turn the key on with the engine cut off switch in the run position.

4) Connect to the ECU with the software.

5) Reset the TPS.

6) Set TPS position to 5.1 using the idle screw.

7) Start the bike and let it warm to 320 degrees.

8) Turn the idle screw up until the idle is at 1050.

You're done!

Throttle stop screw was backed all the way out - readings were zero'd on the meter... as well, I was able to apply reverse pressure to the grip throttle, and get it to stick... The numbers each time did not move at all... Al indicates that they should stay within .01... mine were exactly the same...

I then did a test tps reset to validate communication - worked. Went on to the real deal. Once it was reset, I adjusted the throttle stop screw back in, till I got a reading of 5.1. Then, started the bike, an let it warm up. At the appropriate temperature, and the idle on the bike was actually around 1100 rpm... so I had to lower it a bit...

I'll do another reset tonight and see what's going on... And I'll incorporate an AFV reset too...

I'm quite confident that the cables aren't 100% They require a little wiggling to make em work - but once connected - no problems at all. I'm using the older 233 laptop with a true serial port on the back - perfect! No issues whatsoever.

On the other hand, my brand new P4 Dell with a Keyspan adapter - no go. And that's alright by me - saved myself $50.
