Hi, has anybody here removed the horrible stock X tank guard from the xb9sx?
Is it bolted in place, or glued somehow?
Any tips for removing it??
Thanks a lot
Giacomo

Glued, I doubt you can get it off without leaving permanent damage or marks on the cover.

You are better off putting on a cover from another model or buy a tank bag.

I've heard of people taking them off with a heat gun, but a hair dryer might be better. Heat guns can melt plastic pretty quickly!

I suggest the prudent use of a heat gun (low setting) from both top and bottom of the cover. Don't focus on one area - small circles on the underside, and the same over the tank X. Don't be in a rush. Allow the parts to get hot, but don't overheat them... Start at the corner of the X, and lift it one leg at a time from the outside in. Once the parts cool, you can remove any residue from the tank cover (citrus solvent - simple green) shouldn't cause any damage. Then, if it requires any polishing, I like to use the Novus brand of plastic polish. And I've just recently discovered the Mother's Powerball (foam polishing attachment for a drill), and it works great!

Good luck with the removal...hope this helps

Is the Buell/american motorcycle brand on the cover also glued on, because I always wanted to remove it, just didn't want to mess up the cover

If anyone does take theirs off I would be interested in acquiring the rubber piece.

Before I Line-Xed all my body work I took the Buell letters and the X off the airbox cover. All are glued on. I did not use heat. I just peeled the stuff off. The letters are a throw away. The X is pretty tough so it survives being peeled off. If you use bug and tar remover to remove the adhesive then use Maguires plastic cleaner then plastic polish you will never know there was anything stuck to the airbox cover.
