Buell has made much of the fact (and justifiably so) that the XB's meet all current exhaust emission standards without the use of a catalytic converter. OTOH we've recently seen how much the performance of these bikes can be improved by re-tuning the ECM to richen the fuel mixture across the range. I'm wondering if the addition of a catalytic converter to the design would allow the engines to put out more power by keeping the exhaust emissions within limits while allowing a richer fuel mixture. This also seems like it could be the answer to the complaints raised by Uly riders about pinging and low speed tractability. Thoughts? | ||

converters need the air fuel ratio to be close to 14.7-1 to rich to long and you burn up the cat and or get that rotten egg smell I suspect the Xb's have a fixed timing map that dose not change with temperature I would think the fix for pinging would be (other than running cooler) temperature variable timing maps and a knock sensor |
