Buell has made much of the fact (and justifiably so) that the XB's meet all current exhaust emission standards without the use of a catalytic converter.

OTOH we've recently seen how much the performance of these bikes can be improved by re-tuning the ECM to richen the fuel mixture across the range.

I'm wondering if the addition of a catalytic converter to the design would allow the engines to put out more power by keeping the exhaust emissions within limits while allowing a richer fuel mixture. This also seems like it could be the answer to the complaints raised by Uly riders about pinging and low speed tractability.

Thoughts?

converters need the air fuel ratio to be close to 14.7-1
to rich to long and you burn up the cat and or get that rotten egg smell
I suspect the Xb's have a fixed timing map that dose not change with temperature
I would think the fix for pinging would be (other than running cooler) temperature variable timing maps and a knock sensor
