Court,
A question for you: Since you are currently among the job-detached, and since you've already laid the groundwork for your epic LapAroundAmerica, what would it take to get you to do another "Lap" only this time on an XB9 (R or S, your choice), loaded with saddlebags, somewhat self-contained.

With all the current GPS and cellular technology we could all track your progress live on-line. This would do several things:
1. It would give you something to do, although I don't think this is a concern as I'm sure you find plenty to do.
2. It would show if the XB series in their current configuration and wheelbase are suitable for a cross-country long range ride.
3. It would do other stuff too, I just can't think of them at the moment because my download just completed and I have to go back to work now.

I wonder how hard it would be to find a dealer to grant you a donor bike.

bye.

XB Lap - 2003

I'd prefer NOT to respond as to how I "just happened" to have this :)

Wait a minute, are you planning what I think you're planning?
If you are, you dirty dog you, absolutely freakin' fantastically great. Sometimes I see things that aren't there, but are, and tie them to other events and plans that may or may not be deliberately related, but are. Oh boy, a little background inside rib needle is past due I'd say.

More like "WAS". I had the entire "minute by minute" logistics developed . . think of www.livefromabuellxb.com

Unfortunatley......

<<<Buell just happens to think that shorter riders shouldn't have to be doomed to a life of cruisers.<<<

Good thinking, the market for women riders is increasing and most need lower bikers, so why would a company not want to capatilize on that market !?

The Blast is a good bike, but after a while even women get the desire upgrade and why would a company want to lose that shorter female customer due to a lack of options in the Buell family for them !!

I think the XB9S Low is a Great idea !!

Mike,

That's a very interesting thought. After reading of Gary Egan's record setting coast-to-coast endurance run on a Ducati ST4 (3,149 miles in just shy of 37 hours), I wondered if Court might be up for an XB9R coast-to-coast challenge. He'd need to fit extra fuel capacity (8 gallon limit), but with the fuel economy of the Buell twin, he would have an instant advantage over the Duc. Would it be too tough to fit a conventional tank atop a greatly constricted airbox?

Do it Court! Team Elves CTC racing! You KNOW you want to. :] Certainly someone would donate an XB9R for the effort. I'm thinking late Spring, early Summer. What do you say?

I was thinking, since you added the "WAS", what that this might be planned to coincide with the H-D 100th. Most of their ride routes will be 5-9 days. Your route there has 9 days. Would have put you leaving WI when the longest ride leaves the west coast. Would have put you arriving in WI at the same time as all the H-D rides, and crossing all of them at some point. Just seemed like a little shoe shine gig of sorts, a friendly little neener-neener between H-D and Buell if you will. Oh well, such is how my head works sometimes.

Mike:

I hadn't even thought of that and, at least in my eyes, anything ill-motivated would serve no useful purpose.

The idea came up at a small gathering of folks (none of whom other than I have ever owned a Buell) who thought Buell needed to make a visible example - kinda like Superbike is currently doing) of the reliabilty of the XB platform.

I just thought it'd be fun and I've grown quite sick and tired of the "yeah, but......" Buell nay-sayers and quite frustrated that they stay, continuing to moan, rather then go buy something they like. There was an "in-your-face" component, but a "nice" one.

I'm not sure that doing it "for speed" (girls help me out here) makes it any better. The BEST way to showcase a Buell is to optimize the involvement of PEOPLE and the ENJOYMENT of the EXPERIENCE.

That's right Court, it's not the size but the technique that's key to the experience.

Someone once threw out the the idea of 'following' some of the Harley rides which take more direct routes by running somewhat parallel on the backroads and beating them every where they go.

Harley guys: I remember seeing those guys up ahead back at that other stop and we left first but I don't remember anybody passing us. <head scratching> And what's with all the grinning?

I know of a place you could sleep for free when you get into San Antonio, TX. That is a stop right??? Really good BBQ also. Plus you could pose the XB with some classic Buells at the same time!! :)

Funny this discussion came up.

Shazam and I were talking about taking on the IronButt 50cc over beers last night (Jacksonville to San Diego in 50 hours). Looks like Court's taking the same route, albeit probably not in a single sleep-deprived 50hr masochistic flogging.

Dan:

I don't eat BBQ in San Antonio, I do straight Tex-Mex down off West Commerce and Santa Rosa in Market Square. My counsins led me to while they were all at Trinity.

Funny you mention San Antonio; I am working on a story today and was re-reading one I wrote when Erik and I were in San Antonio for a HD Annual meeting in the mid-90's.

I wrote one of my "non-biker" gushy diatribes there one night afer spending a night at the Comedy Club over near the Alamo.

One, doubtless, of Amarica's most beautiful and culturally vibrant cities.

Damnit....now you are getting ME interested!

Okay, we can go get some TexMex. Just get your butt on an XB and do it!! Sounds like Dave is willing to get on board with providing the bike. One night of lodging is already taken care of. Hell, give me some advanced notice and I might meet you for half of it on one of my bikes!! What else do you need?? :)

But he has to bring his own can of refried beans. Those are a high dollar commoditie here!!

Is Mi Tierra still in business? Seems like that was one of the premier authentic Tex-Mex joints the last time I was in SA for more than a day.

>>>>& lowering it even more will not entice those of us larger folks.

Dyna:

I thought I had the world's largest ego and I hereby relenquish the honor to you.

REALITY CHECK: I'm betting that Erik Buell didn't loose much sleep wondering if this bike would be "acceptable" or "entice" you and I.

==================================================

I realize Erik sleeps well at night. Im also sure he doesnt lose any sleep over the countless numbers of folks who have cursed him over the years for the lack of reliability in some of the tube framers.

I have read more than 1 persons statement regarding the fact they wished the lil bolt was offered in a "supersized" version.

Instead of taking my statement that I wished Buell would make a bike that fit me better, you wish to turn it around as a knock against the company. I didnt say " The XB9S low sux" I said I wish they made a bigger bike that I would buy.

Sometimes I really wish I understood your thought process. I say I would like to get some positive news outta East troy regarding a bigger bike & you ridicule it. I mention a bigger lightning & you make a assinine reference to K-mart bras..btw I prefer Victorias secret.

The great thing about the XB9S low is it illustrates you can accomodate different sized riders without completely changing the bike design. It's great that a short person can get a powerful bike and still plant his/her feet, and a tall person can get a bike that has a short wheelbase and outstanding handling.

"anything ill-motivated would serve no useful purpose"

While that may have been the tone to my thoughts, it was more friendly competition than ill-willed, and more along the lines of the rest of your comments. When I tell people I rode the M2 from Milwaukee to Seattle they say "on a Buell?". Would go a long way to showing again that there is more to a product than misassumptions and blind generalizations.

That might have been me with the parallel riders on the HOG rides as well. Sort of tackle two issues: 1) show that Buells are more than up to the task; 2) show Buell owners that they don't have to take the parade route to have fun on the ride. A third item might be to gather in the evening's conversations about bikes and history and future and such.

Oh well, long rides are out for me this summer at least due to school and such.
