I have a very intermittent miss from the engine on my 2004 xb12s. (out of warranty)
It only does it when I am cruising at a constant speed in high gear for a while and the engine is not under a load (50 mph or so). On a 120 mile ride this past weekend, it did it 3 times within about a minute half way thru the ride and then never again. It usually does it once on a ride after the engine is warmed up. I replaced the spark plugs with NGK’s and no difference. There is 7,500 miles on the bike and it seemed to start shortly after I had the TPS reset at 6,000 miles. I talked to the dealer about it, and he told me the TPS reset would not cause the problem. The bike starts fine and idles fine. I was thinking of replacing the stock plug wires with a solid core stainless steel ones like Accel or another.
I have not as of yet check the ohms on the wires but will when I get a ohm meter.
Any thoughts on what could be causing the problem? Bike is stock

I rode with one of the guys from the factory last summer and asked him about the same thing - I'll get a stumble like that once in a great while. He said it was nothing to worry about - just characteristic of the engine. Last time it happened to me was in cooler weather.

I have had it since the bike was new. I assumed it was just the nature of the beast.

check the plug wires where they connect to the coil. mine was so rusty in there from getting wet i dont know why it even ran. it hiccuped on me a couple weeks ago while doing a wheelie and i blew a front fork seal. decided it was in need of a tuneup. you could see where it had been arcing around to make contact with the wire. my bike is still in pieces so dont know if all is well, but thought it might be a place for you to look if they have never been off or something.

Thanks guys! It never stumbled before. I did not pull the wires of the coil. checked just to see that they were on tight. Bike has never been ridden in the rain. Just started this in January when I ride in colder temps. Now that it is getting warmer here in Denver, will see if it stops or continues. Has anybody ever put better solid core wires on their bike?

mine did it as well,
i could never find the problem,
i put my vdst on it and let it run for a wile in the logging option,

i found out that the o2 sensor did spike to much voltage ( high perf. pc3 o2 sensor )
i had a dvm and measured it, but you can't find a spike like that with a dvm.
replaced the sensor, and i have never noticed the stumble again

hope it helps.

my 12 has done that since day one. have tried 3 different ECM's one stocker, and two race, has intermittent lean miss at any steady speed below 70 mph. spark plugs are WHITE, pure WHITE, just like brand new, even with 10,000 miles usage. the bike just runs real lean at cruise speeds. would like to richen up the fuel cells in the 3 to 5 % throttle range. maybe go up around ten percent in fuel for light throttle cruise conditions. really no reason a 1203 cc motorcycle should get 56 miles per gallon, except that it is running too lean.

My 04 12R does the exact same thing. But I rode a 04 Lightning with the exact same setup as mine (Race Kit) and it did not exhibit the same characteristics. It did however hover around 2-2K rpms every time you let off the throttle(off topic) If anyone hears of a fix please let me know. Doesn't bother me much except when I'm trying to stay legal and then it gets old quick!

Fullpower - I think you might have something with the leanness causing the miss. I took the snorkel out and now it seems to miss more often. I am thinking of putting the snorkel back in to see if it gets better. My plugs have always been very white, with black carbon on the threaded edge that contacts the head. When I replaced them with the NGK's, they still looked like new with little if any wear. Your right about the light throttle at cruise conditions is when it happens. What other mod's did you make and was it worse when you installed the drummer from the stock muffler? How do we fix this?

this is a common post, engine stumbling, missing, lurching, etc

check your battery cables and make sure they are both tight, and also look for any wear spots on the cables themselves...that could be the answer to your prob.

Xbrad9r - That was one of the first things I checked, and all was good!

I tried some fuel injector cleaner yesterday - results - no miss and the bike ran noticably better. Will keep you posted. Has anyone tried this on their bikes?
