Picked up a used XB12R on Friday and took it on my first real ride in the mountains today. Rode real mellow since I haven't been on a bike in five months, but it still felt great. Set the suspension up according to the shop manual and it seemed pretty solid.

Only issue was the front brake. Bike only has 1,500 miles or so and I'm getting a little shudder when I apply the front. Seems to work Ok but doesn't feel quite right. I've read about possibly needing to tighten the steering head, replacing the rotor or checking the brake caliper fasteners.

Or maybe I should just wait to put a few more miles on it?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Looking forward to next weekend already.

The shudder should not be there. Check the basics first and it sounds like you have a pretty good direction to go. Take a look at rotor itself.... are there any discolorations on it like oil or cleaning agents? I have seen where bike polish drips onto rotors and calipers and will cause the brakes to pulsate.

The stock brake pads leave a deposit on the rotor. Al at American Sport Bike recognized this problem and suggested that I try the Lyndall pads. What a difference!

The Lyndall's cleaned all the deposits off and now no more shudder! The splotchy colors on the rotor are even gone.

First check your steering head bearings torque. That should reduce it.

I will second the Lyndall pads though. Put them on my bike and I no longer have any shudder issues. They are worth every penny.

Also make sure your rotor is floating all the way around the perimeter. Don't know if a stuck bushing would cause it, but it's worth a look.

I second what Skully said.

Also, check all the bolts and washers ,etc, mine were not aligned correctly, did not allow the rotor to float as designed, took them all off and redid it, with the lrb's, so much better!
