I need help! My bike only has 279 miles on it and my check engine light is on. I was driving the bike back from work feeling all proud of my new bike and the low fuel indicator came on. So when I went to stop I noticed that the bike started to idle funny, and it started fluttering and missing. The low fuel mileage indicator only had 10 miles on it, so I thought it was running out of gas. Made a pit stop and filled her up. It took about 3.8Gal of fuel, so I figured that I still had about 1\2Gal of fuel left. I didn't think it should run like that with that much fuel left. OK so I started it up and drove it less than a 100 yards to the next light and it started doing the same thing but this time the check engine came on and started running bad again, almost like it was missing and the idle was coming down to 850rpm then going up to 1050rpm back and forth. So drove it home as soon as I could. Shut it off and let it cool down and started it again and it did the same thing, ran ruff and the check engine light still came on. Is there any way to check codes or just take it back to the dealer to let them figure out whats wrong with it.

It's new, and it's under warranty.
take it back to the dealer. Let them worry about it.

That sounds so familiar. Back in January, my Ss started acting similar to yours...it would miss, backfire, hesitate under throttle and stall. The fan would run for no reason and the CEL was throwing codes. I was able to replicate the fault and stall the bike by tugging gently on the ECM wiring harness when the bike was idling. I brought it to the dealer and they found nothing. The tech was able to retrieve the codes from the ECM and it indicated a ground fault.

Unfortunately, I had them install the race ECM at the same time, so the problem was never diagnosed properly, but the bike certainly runs better now. It runs so well in fact, I have my doubts to whether or not I had a weak ECM in the first place. The gains I received by the drummer, ECM and k&n were incredible.

My suggestion is to bring the bike to the dealer and have them look into it. From your description of the faults, I tend to think it is a ground problem of some kind.

Bring it in..had a similiar issue when I had mine about a week..turned out to be the exhaust..quick fix...

If you want to diagnose the engine light, try this:

Make a jumper wire, bullet connectors work if you enlarge the hole a bit.

Connect the jumper to the #1 and #2 terminals on the data link (marked on the back).

Ignition ON, run switch ON, wait 8 seconds, engine light will blink. Trouble code is preceded by 6 rapid flashes, then a 2 second pause.

First digit blinks, 2 second pause, then 2nd digit.
Multiple codes blinked after another 2 second pause. If a code repeats, you have them all.

code 11: TPS
13: O2 sensor
14: Engine temp sensor
15: IAT sensor
16: Battery Voltage
23: Front injector
24: Front ignition coil
25: Rear ignition coil
32: rear injector
33: Fuel pump
35: Tach
36: Fan
44: Bank Angle sensor
52,53,54,55: ECM failure
56: Cam sync failure.

This is the procedure listed in the service manual on my XB9R.

(I don't know where the data link on the Uly is. It should be near the ECM, capped off with a rubber plug.

Did they say that the race ECM would void the warranty? That is my next step if my ECM doesn't get used to the Econo Drummer. It's still running rough after almost a week of riding it. It actually stalled out on me one day in traffic when it was at idle, then sputtered home. The only time it runs even half smooth is when it's good and hot, but even then it still sputters.

I think that the $200 for the ECM will be money well spent. BTW, does the TPS need reset if you instal the EMC?

My XB9SX did some thing simlar at 1,000 miles. Turned out to be a bad trottle sensor.

Yes you need a TPS reset after the Race ECM is installed. Remeber to keep your old ECM My service dept almost didnt give it back.

Shea, the issue of the race ECM voiding the warranty is a bit of a misnomer. A direct quote from the buell website is as follows:

“WARRANTY: Installation of Buell® Pro-Series products, and similar products from other manufacturers, except some street-legal offerings installed by authorized Buell®dealers, may affect your Buell®limited vehicle warranty. See your dealer for more information.”

I asked to service manager at my servicing dealership and he said that that is a catchall phrase that accompanies most performance enhancing accessories that all OE manufacturers produce. The reason I updated to the race ECM was strictly because I was after a better sound with the bike…so I installed a drummer original. I was immediately stricken by a wave of concern with the possibility of leaning the bike out with an open exhaust, thus voiding the warranty, so I asked the service manager about this. He insisted that a race be installed, as the manufacturer would scrutinize any engine damage caused by even the most remote possibility of a modification that I did. So I bought the race and a K&N and was done with it. Don’t know if this answers your question or not, but the answers I got from the boys were just as spongy as my response to your question.

I’m glad I did what I did as the bike, with out a doubt, 10 times the bike it was before. I wasn’t expecting the gains I got…..that is why I think there was something funky with my stocker ECM.

A TPS reset is required after installation, and as windaddiction said, get your old one back. The can be swapped back and forth without a TPS reset.

Thanks for all the replies. I ended up having the dealer in Fresno Ca come get the bike and trailer it back to there shop. They have not called me back yet to tell me what they found. Also they where more than happy to come get the bike from me no questions asked. Great service. I just hope they can fix it soon. Chainsaw thanks for that info with the codes, thats what I was looking for, I will use that later if needed.

Update: Well Harley/Buell dealer called me up around 430 today and told me to pick up the bike, well they close at 500 and could not pick it up today, but there open at 10am tomorrow. Anyway they told me that it was a TPS issue. They reset the TPS and they said everything is fine now. Have you guys ever heard of this. Also told them about the sticking throttle cable, they said that it was the new buell hand grips that I installed, and they where not installed properly. Well, I know that I installed them properly because it was doing that before I installed the grips. It only sticks when the bike is cold, when the bike warms up it does not stick. I've installed plenty of grips in my life. Anyway they said that its fixed and to come get it. I hope that is all thats wrong.

Update: OK, I'm really bent about this. I went to pick up my bike and I noticed that the frame or gas tank had some streaks in the gray paint right under the hand grip where they said that the throttle was sticking, some kinda chemical dripped off the grip and put a couple of streaks and it won't come out! OK temperature is rising. Then the throttle still sticking, going up further. Then I pulled the bike outside and started it up, and it did the same thing again, WHAT THE @&#$@%! Here lies the problem, the mechanics where not there to see what was wrong and they won't be there until til Tuesday. The poor salesman that was there, I gave him a ear full. I know its not his fault, but man! So I just left the bike there. So I'll call Tuesday and talk to a manager and vent on him, oh well what can you do when you stuck with one dealer in a 300 mile, north or south of this area that only deals with Buell bikes.

UPDATE: Well I think I jump the gun at Harley\Buell dealer. They took care of my problem with the sticking throttle and took care of the streak stains on the frame. They also found out what the main cause of my problems where. Code 13, Bad O2 sensor on head pipe. They have to drop the motor to replace it. books say 3.5 hr to do the job. Anyway the mechanic told me if I wanted I could have the pipe jet hot coated while its off. I'll take the dealer up on that. Anyway its all good!
