Drained the swingarm oil to day and put a new oil filter on for the upcoming season here in Chicago. Just wanted to know if there are any tricks to be forewarned of prior to using the shop manual when draining the primary oil on an 04' xb12r? Just asking for some advice prior to ripping into it. Thanks!!!

Get a new rubber o-ring and not a bad idea to get the gasket for the clutch access window either. I don't like reusing the old ones, but I have. No tricks though, it's pretty straightforward.

Be careful not to overfill it - a quart is generally too much. With the bike vertical the oil level should just touch the teeth on the lowest part of the clutch basket. I'd recommend checking the chain tension too - sweet shifting starts here !

Mine took one quart precisely to match the illustration in the manual - I covered the teeth themselves as per the drawing, but no higher. I tried re-using the gasket last time and it wept.

If you level the bike when you drain the primary to get the extra ounce out it takes one FULL quart exactly and will be perfect.

Reused my gasket three times now. I shoot it with brake cleaner to clean it up. No problem. I am noticing a little play and some seepage from the shifter output shaft though. I bought a new seal and will put it on soon. I sure hope that shaft is not becoming a problem.

I get mine nice and hot and then drain- you can get it all out that way. Dont be alarmed by the metal flakes all over the magnet- if its new it probably be pretty nasty.

Take it for a spin for at least 10 min then stnd it up straight and you'll get a good quart in there. I've changed minne 3 times so far and never had any issues loosing a quart as some other report.

Be careful not to over-tighten the 3 bolts that hold the inspection cover on....I learned the hard way my first primary oil change and turned the threads into fur.

I've seen as little as 30 inch pounds over the listed torque will screw those holes. Use the low end torque spec as per the manual, or deal with massive problems. Those threads are made out of papermachete.

Thanks for the info on the primary oil issue. I knew a little feedback will install a little confidence and keep me from yelling obscenities while the neighbors laugh. Thanks to everyone! Dan-see you over the riding season.

A little trick...

Since the primary drain is right over the muffler, I like to cut a 2 liter bottle in half lengthwise, leaving the pour spout intact. Once the drain bolt is loosened, hook the bottom of the new "fluid drain facilitator" behind the drain hole and pull the plug.

If you have done this correctly, the fluid will drain down the bottle, out the spout, and into the pan, leaving almost no mess to clean off the bike.
