OK, I have owned this bike for about 3 weeks and I still can't use to the noises that come from this motor. Today I went down to my local Harley/Buell dealer and I let them listen to it and they said that it sounds normal. Well they also said that the bike has a 2 year warranty and if something was wrong that they would fix it. OK what does that mean. Anyway this is what I hear, a light tapping or knocking noise from deep inside the motor but only when the motor warms ups. Then I hear a lot of ticking from the top of the motor, I think thats its the rockers or the lifters or even the values coming thur the exhaust. What do you guys think, its hard for me to judge the sounds of these motors because I've always owned I-4s or my last bike was a Kawasaki Mean Streak 1500 V Twin, it had a tap to the motor but not like this. Please let me know what you think, or am I over reacting. The bike only has 180 miles on it. One more thing, is there suppose to be oil in the air filter area from blow by from the heads. | ||

You got to keep in mind this motor is air cooled. There are no water jackets around cylinders to dampen sound. So the engine noises are more prevelant coming from it. I had to get used to mine too. Congrats on the bike  | ||

ok.. no there isnt supposed to be oil in the air box. exception to that rule could be along the lines of the fact that it is a NEW motor and you are in the break in period. the rings more than likely have just not seated yet. it should get better. you might notice a fair amount of oil consumption also for the first few thousand, not always , but keep an eye on it. seems to be normal in alot of them. as for the sound... when it DOESNT sound like a blender full of nickels, thats when you are more likely to have a problem. and yes im serious. | ||

As Sgthigg said no water jackets, and just to make matters worse those cooling not only radiate heat they do the same thing for sound. I have been riding Harley's most of my life when I switched to a Buell it all sounded normal to me. John | ||

It's normal. I had the same experience you did with my 04' xb12r. I was used to driving inline 4's and the sounds they made. Just watch the oil as you break it in. Also don't baby it during break in. You want those rings to seat and things to mate properly. It will help the longevity of the engine. Check it out, "breaking in an engine" on the net to get an idea. Happy riding. Congrats! | ||

Noise and a little oil misting in the air box is normal for both of mine. Both ran great with zero problems. ride it. | ||

My '91 1200 makes similar noises and when I got the '04 XB12s, it's like a twin brother. Excessive oil in the swingarm could also increase the blow-by.. | ||

Well that dose it. It all normal from what I've been told. Its time for a louder pipe. I believe that will take care of the engine noise problems! Thanks for the fast replies. | ||

That's the spirit  . And yeah, some oil misting in the air-filter is normal as well. The solution to that is a Catch can from Drummer. I have one and they aren't "cheap" wrt money or quality, but they're very worth it. It'll keep some of the carbon out of your combustion chamber as well. | ||

We lost a motor in the race bike at Daytona. The guy in the pit next to us asked if it made any noise before it went, I had to laugh and say "It's a Buell, of course there was noise" Like they have already said, worry when the noises stop. | ||

First Big inch twin for me ! Always drove in line 4's that were smooth as silk and noise free . These bikes have character and the more you drive it the better it gets . | ||

That's "probably" the fuel pump Nlegrett. Being that it's IN the frame, the frame amplifies the noise of it. | ||

what about a noise coming from the engine that sounds like a whining fan like noise (not sure how else to explain it)? Could also be the primary chain. Just adjusted mine and now I can hear a slight "whirring". Again, Normal  | ||

the cooling fan (underneath the seat) can also make a whirring sound. It will run more often on a new bike than one that is broken-in. Odds are it is your fuel pump though. | ||

today we finaly had a great day for riding here in Wa, when I fired up the bike I felt I had almost a knocking sound,, louder than normal. Higher rpm seemed to make it go away for most part... But If it were a true knock it would get louder with higher RPM to my experience. So I chalking it up to beeing a air cooled v-twin in cooler weather and me not beeing around them much. lol I guess if it gets worse as the temps increase and more miles get put on it I'll take it in,,, specialy before the warrenty goes out in 07. lol | ||

Nope, This is my first v-twin lol Always had say like the old air cooled single thumper dirt bikes but not as noisy by far... But hey, I love this bike. | ||

You think these things make noise, I rode a buddy's ducati 748 home. That clutch sounds like the bike's gonna explode! |
