Well my tires (pirelli diablo) are finally comming to their end...
Yesterday I had a chance to finally go out for a mildly spirited ride (so nice to finally have some time to get out). Figuring that might as well use up a little more of the tire edges before I turn them in. After I got back I checked them and about 2 inches from center was done... (a waste when I could still have plenty of canyon miles, but won't risk it).
So I get back home today, and look at the tires and the thread is back!
I stood there scratching my head for a while, wondering if I had gone completely mad.
I decided to look for the "low" spot, and indeed about 2ft of the tire is much more worn then the rest.
And "surprise surprise!" the low area happens to be right opposite of the wheel weight.
Anywhom... no real point to this thread, just somewhat flustered that I pay them money to mount my tires and they still screw it up...
Well, this time I will supervise their tire mounting... Also hopefully this set (pilot powers) will see a lot more canyons and if everything will go well a track day.

I'm not sure... possibly in the canyons

I used to go riding early saturday mornings in the malibu area...
It would be jolly to get together for a ride sometime.

Interex2050,
If you don't mind getting your hands dirty, and you're not object to saving close to $100 per tyre, you're more than welcome to order them online, have them shipped to my place, and come by and fit (and balance) them here.

...cause no one cares more about your bike than you do

I used to ride the Santa Monicas a lot but after several near misses with tourists in my lane I started riding the Crest and some of the twistys Above the high desert. I never ride the canyons on the weekends anymore.

I sure miss Latigo canyon and the run up from the store to target rock though.

Rhinowerx,
Thank you very much for the kind offer, which I might just have to accept. Although I would have to wait till next time, then I could just get them shipped over there (the pilot powers have been sitting here for a while, and I have no one willing to make the drop off trip).
Also maybe you could help me get over my paranoia about tire mounting. I used to change my tires, but that was on an unpainted spoked rim. Until I cracked one of the rims... haven't tried since (although I am sure my lack of proper tools didn't help {crowbar and screwdrivers}).
Skyguy,
I agree about the canyons being a bit hairy sometimes. Luckily saturday mornings (8am ish) its virtually free of life.
Although the animals, loose gravel, sand, and other such icky articles (or the thought of) makes it quite discouraging to really have some fun.
I went up to the crest once... jolly fun.
Well aside from being stung in the chest several times by an angry wasp trapped in my jacket.
If you plan on going up there sometime and wouldn't mind me tagging along pm me...

Let me know If you guys got the the crest, Ill go to. Although I was up there skiing a couple weeks ago, and it was pretty wet. I rode it a couple years back with a buddy who's got a Gagiva Grand Canyon, and we did a 200 mile ride roundtrip, and I also had a friend join me along the way. Bee got stuck in my helmet, thankfully never stung me and I let it out as soon as we stopped for lunch.

speaking of bees...
if I remember right, it was the second day after I got my XB. I was riding near the Getty center, they have some nice but short roads up there... A bee got stuck in my helmet and stung me in the temple.
At first I thought it was a rock, until I heard buzzing...
Vaneo1, if you want to go for a ride sometime pm me as well...

Hmmmm sounds like I might have to plan a Crest ride! The round trip from San Bernardino with the route we run is 260 or 280 miles. You can shave off a few by meeting up with us at the Gas station on the 138 and the 15 though. It is a heck of a great ride with everything from tight decreasing radius turns to 100mph sweepers!
There is an excellent little restaurant up there.

I would prefer to ride on Wed. If I hear back from enough folks that can only make it on a weekend then I will schedule it for a Sunday. If out on a weekend I will set a slower pace than a Wed. This is done for a few reasons.
1. Safety of the public at large. It gets busy up there.
2. I want everyone to go home in one piece.
3. Cops. They are thick up there on the weekends.
4. More than one beer at "The Ranch" and you will ride home alone.

Only a few rules.
1. Wear good gear!
2. Ride at your own pace! The fast guys will wait all all the intersections.
3. More than one beer at the "The Ranch" and you will ride home alone.
4. No bleeding on Skyguy..........

If interested let me know as I think it will be about three weeks before the roads and weather make for a good ride. Could be a lot of fun!

Ciao,

Hey Interex2050, all the rear tires on my FXRS used to wear like the one you described. They were always balanced. It always road smooth in back-never noticed any unusual vibes. Always kept the pressure to specs. I just figured it was one of life's mysteries

hmm...
in that case could it be possible that there is a strange defect in the casting of the rim?
or maybe something funny with the bearings?

I wonder if they can keep the carcass truly concentric when molding the tread onto it.
It's probably harder than it sounds.

That is also a good point...
I would hope that they can get that right,
but then I did not have this problem with the 207s
I suppose it could be due to that Pirelli moved up to a different molding technique (if I remember right), and they are still getting the bugs out.
