I am wondering if anyone has replaced the standard low beam xb-r with a high beam unit. it seems that the high beam is brighter than the low beam. is it as easy as putting a new bulb in? i'm curious. looking for some more light for cheap. | ||

You can take the low beam lamp apart and remove the half moon shape sheet metal piece that blocks the upper half of the light beam. Other than that piece I believe the lamps are the same. | ||

Gowindward. I was asking how to remove the bulb, my low beam is burned out and i don't want to screw up something trying to get it out. I do have a bad habit of forcing thing that don't want to be and breaking it. Any help would be appreciated. | ||

Behind the light assem is a rubber cap. pull the cap off and there will be a metal spring clip. Unhook it and the bulb is out. Kind of tuff for me to explain, but hopefully you'll see what I mean. | ||

I wouldn't even bother with removing the spoon thing. You can get a stock high beam that'll install in place of the low for about $50. It doesn't take long to install either. I work 2nd shif and ride 40 minutes a night. I did the spoon thing, bulb thing, and finally resorted to the replacement thing. I'm very happy with the results. | ||

I would have to disagree with you Gowin' ... I have removed the spoon on my low and it is pretty obvious that the two assemblies have different focal points and light patterns .. I have been keeping an eye on Ebay lately for a high beam but at this point I am going to be calling Daves to order one. | ||

The lenses on the lamps may have difference focal point. They seem to have the same shape on the exterior and I had the high beam lamp apart this weekend because the bezel that holds the lens on had broken. The back of the high beam lens look flat, I don't recall what shape the interior of the low beam had when I had it apart taking the spoon out. I figured the difference was more from how the two are aimed. With the low beam being pointed lower. Anyhow, I'm sure we all wish the bike had more light output. | ||

best way i can describe the difference between the high and low beam. is the low beam is like a flood light, and the high beam is like a spot light. i have put a high beam housing on in place of my low beam. it makes a huge difference for me when i am driving at night. and well worth the extra money. brian | ||

Brian, Do you feel like you gave up any light being cast to the sides of the road with the dual high beam lamps? Around here it's the critters coming from off the road that will kill you. | ||

Motolight, Loren I will ride mine to the BRAG Meeting Thursday weather permitting. They absolutely light up the night. I used the 50 watt option so with only one headlight one I now have 155 watts of halogen light. Easy install and look good. | ||

Gowindward, Thats a good question I was wonder that IF ya change out the low beam and stick to highs in YEs it may give long range performance better,BUT on the other side you wd. lose the light all together down low by the bike as you say to see them Critters???? Will like to get some answers on this before I do the swap out myself..Thanks | ||

thanks all for the input so far. i am thinking of going the route of putting a new high beam assy in the place of the std low beam. it is really easy to out-drive the lighting capacity of the bike.. has anyone messed around with a brighter bulb? | ||

SOmeone fit up a pair of hella? head lights. They had to enlarge the openings in the fairing to fit them because they are larger diameter. | ||

The motolights I used are two lights one each on the forks. The standard motolights are 35 watts each, but for a small price you can upgrade to 50 watts each. They are halogen. I installed them so they are always on when the switch is on. So when either the high beam or low beam is on I have 155 watts of light on all the time. I wired (relay) mine to a plug coming out of the outlet under the seat of my uly that I use to power my electric clothes. That way it is switched. The power and ground goes to the battery. The brushed ones look like they are made for the bike. People think they are factory. The bulbs are free liftime replacement also. Hope that helps. | ||
