1. I have seen on many mod. presentations that someone combine the tfi with the race ecm, but I have read somewhere that the tfi unit should be used without any other units. What would be the best option?

2. Is it different kind of tfi units that is to be used on our Buell's? The reason that I ask this question is that I see some sell the TFI 1045, while other advertise it as only TFI.

Thanks

1. TFI with stock ECM would be better. Although I would not recommend using the TFI unless you've got more mods than the filter and pipe. Otherwise, welcome to tuning hell. The Race ECM is really all you will need for a filter and pipe. It's a nice plug and play device.

2. There's only one TFI unit for the Buell that I know of.

There are still PCIIIs available but I think the best solution is to get your stock ECM remapped for your particular intake/exhaust set up by Daves or American Sport Bike.

Skully: Is it that easy? Can I just list up my mods and Daves or American Sport Bike can make a new ECM for me?

Yes if they have a map developed on the dyno for your combination of mods

I've had good luck with my TFI on my 12R. All I have is a bit of surging at a steady 4500 4750 rpm in high gear. As that is about 100 mph, I don't run into it much. I didn't do much adjusting and it made the bike run much smoother. All I have is the K&N and Odies pipe with the stock ecm...
That being said, the new mapped ecm/s sounds like that are going to be the way to go...

"All I have is a bit of surging at a steady 4500 4750 rpm in high gear."

What's happening is that your TFI is trying to tune the closed loop portion of the system to an A/F ratio that's too far from the stock curve. You come out of closed loop at 4500 and the ECM is jumping back to it's open loop curve. That jumps your A/F ratio and the power jumps accordingly.

Hogs,
If the surging is in the learning rpm, 32-3800rpm, turn pot 4 up till it quits....if the surging is after 4000rpm, turn pot 3 up a number and ride a bit till it learns...if you use the TFI with the race ecm then you have to use higher settings altogether because the race ecm has more control over the airfuel curve than the stock ecm...I usually tune the 4th pot on the road with the TFI mounted on top of the airbox cover...

Thanks Kevin, I'll try that... I had adjusted the 4th pot from 7 to almost 8:30 and that moved the surging around a bit and maybe lessened it some but it's definatly still there...

the other Kevin : )
