Newbie here, thanks for your help. At my bros house and just drained my primary fluid out of my 03 XBS Lightning. Went to local Non HD motorcycle shop and got 1 quart of Revtech Gear and Chain lube. Get back and take off the cover w 2 torx bits. Before I pour, is this how you refill it and is one quart enough for my 03 xbs? I am poor and do not own a service manual, and I can not get a hold of the closest Buell dealer to talk to a mechanic. I am just put on hold. Please help. I need to get home in an hour!!!! | ||

Sounds ok. It may not need the whole quart, though. Fill until it just covers the bottom of the clutch, WITH BIKE STANDING UP.....you may need a flashlight to see in there. I don't know about that fluid tho???? Does it have a weight/viscosity rating? (Message edited by tank_bueller on March 01, 2006) | ||

It is called Revtech High Performance Gear and Chaincase Lube for Sportsters. On the back, it says it "is a common lubricant for the transmission and primary crankcase of an XL or an XR." The guy at my local shop, this is the stuff. He just used this crap on an 01 Lightning. | ||

Sorry. that info is not right!!!!! The circular cover with an extension is on the LEFT side and has THREE torx bolts in it. sorry for the bad info.....typing too fast (deleted other post) (Message edited by tank_bueller on March 01, 2006) | ||

What? So it is not the cover w the 2 torx bits? I am talking about the side you shift with, the left side. | ||

the side you shift on...yes larger cover with 3 bolts. On my bike, I fill with bike standing, and when I lean her over on the stand the fluid will nearly run out of the cover...but not quite. | ||

how far is home?? It should be OK, but not knowing exactly what weight/viscosity is, I wouldn't leave it in for too long. | ||

When you drain the bike... Level it. pick it up off the kick-stand so it's level and preferably on a level section of pavement from front to rear of the bike. If you do that, it'll take the whole quart and be perfect. If you don't level it to allow as much fluid to drain as possible you'll have just a little fluid left in the bottle at the right level. I'd say that w/o a manual, the best way is to level it to drain as much as possible, then put in the full quart. I've got 20K miles on my 12R and I've changed that fluid nine or ten times. After about the second I figured that out and it's shifted smoothly every time. | ||

Just FYI... If you get the fluid 1/16" too high or too low it'll shift funny. | ||

I looked it up. You can look at this stuff up at customchrome.com. Click on "our brands" on the top left. The local motorcycle shop swore up and down about it. I do not feel comfortable now. I will put this in and get home. ASAP, I will put in Mobil 1 75w-90. Thanks for the help | ||

Pulling the smaller 2 bolt cover on the shifter side of the bike is fine. In fact it is easier but you will have to use a funnel to get the oil in. 5 oil changes so far using the smaller cover and I have yet to bother with changing the gasket. | ||

If RevTech says it works for Sporty's I'd leave it in. Next time use the Mobil1 | ||

Put in 30 ounces through the chain inspection cover and you'll likely be okay. To be absolutely sure of fluid level you'll need to remove the clutch inspection cover, and get the bike upright on level ground, like the guys already advised. |
