HI,
my first post here, very thorough site you guys got here, looks like i'm gonna spend some time reading through it...

for now, i'd like to purchase an xb12 and could use some help...
all i need to know at the moment is what differences are there between the 04 and 05 xb12's?

i've read somewhere the forks on the 05's are bigger...what else?
the price diff. between the 04 xb12's and 05's is pretty big, so if the differences between the two aren't considerable, i'd buy an 04

thanks.

You are correct on the forks. Went from 41mm to 43mm.If you want to do stoppies, then the larger forks would be better. Buy the 04 if too big a difference in price.

is there anything else changed between the two yrs?
tranny, motor ugrades? better rear shock? etc? or just the forks?

someone told me to buy the 05, that they're much improved over the 04's...
and that's why i ask.

There were quite a few changes on the 06 models but not much between 04 and 05.

My 04 Firebolt rocks, I have absolutely no complaints with it

I have an 04 xb12s and have not heard of any other changes between the two years except for the fork. The bike runs great and have had NO problems with it in almost 7,000 miles in 8 months of ownership.

I have an 04, if I were buying now I would be set on buying an 06 because of the tranny, and I like the swingarm. If price is the deciding factor and you can't get an 06, then the 04 is probably the better buy if they are cheaper with similar miles -

10K on my 04 12R, and I don't have any complaints. I believe the forks is the only change from 04-05. In 06 the belt was updated, a new oil pump gear, new swingarm and a smoother tranny. I think there may have been a couple other small things, but I'm sure the Firebolt is up for some redisgning soon. It has remained pretty well unchanged since 2003, except for the introduction of the 12 and small upgrades along the way.

12r,
what changes were there on the 06, please elaborate.

i'm the type of guy that would upgrade the suspension anyway, i already got my sights on a penske rear shock, better springs for the forks, basically i want it stiff to hold my 230 lb. fat a$$ and not pogo stick all over the place if i'm doing high speed sweepers and happen to hit a dip in the road.

So the suspension differences are important to me if they're drastic, like the 43mm forks over the 41mm is a big upgrade, TO ME and to the way I ride.

if the 06 has even better stuff, i'd like to know what exactly it is.

anyone know the exact spec differences?

k so the tranny on the 06 is smoother...? smoother shifting or smoother sounding or both?
belt upgrade? what, fatter belt?
swingarm? what's different on it?

I believe the tranny is supposed to be smoother all together on the 06. The swingarm is made by a company in Italy starting in 06, and the belt is bigger and stronger for 06. You can swap the 04 belt for the 06 without changing anything on your bike. I have the 06 belt on mine because I broke the 04 belt after 7,000 miles.

The following is from:
http://www.motorcycledaily.com/23july05_2006buells.htm

"Updates Enhance All 2006 XB Models
All Buell XB models benefit from the following design changes in 2006:

New Swingarm
Designed to be significantly lighter and stiffer, the new XB swingarm weighs 0.56 pounds less than the previous swingarm, a significant reduction in already low unsprung weight. The XB swingarm continues to double as the engine oil reservoir, and the oil-fill cap has a new easy-to-open design and is relocated for better access. The upper and lower belt guards and rear inner fenders have also been reshaped.

A New Transmission, Lighter Clutch, Stronger Belt
A redesigned transmission for all Buell XB models offers reduced mass and improved shift quality, quieter operation and extended service intervals. This transmission replaces moving/sliding gears with thin steel Òdog ringsÓ that slide to cause gear changes, a design commonly used in automotive racing gear boxes. Because the dog rings have less mass than gears, shifting is quicker. New heli- cal-cut gears are smoother and quieter than straight-cut gears. The new transmission requires Buell Formula + Oil, and the oil change interval for the primary/transmission case is extended from 5,000 miles to 10,000 miles. Clutch effort has been reduced by 15 percent (on 984cc powertrain) and 22 percent (on 1203cc powertrain) due to a lighter spring. Finally, a new Goodyear Hibrex final drive belt with Flexten Plus technology has been reinforced for enhanced durability. The new belt weighs just over one pound, compared to drive chains that can weigh up to five pounds, a significant contribution to the Buell philosophy of minimizing unsprung weight.

New Air Intake System
The engine air intake is relocated and integrated with a wrap-around fuel cap cowling in the airbox cover, where air flows through an aluminum hex screen. The new intake system replaces the intake duct that previously passed through the left-side frame section, and thus also results in increased fuel capacity to 3.82 gallons, as the frame doubles as the fuel tank. The duct on the left side of the motorcycle below the frame now delivers cool air exclusively to the rear cylinder.

New Tie-Down Connection
All XB models feature new rear reflector brackets with an eye designed to act as a tie-down point for cargo. The passenger heel guard can also act as a tie-down point."
