Something I've been wanting to ask, with all of the various mods we've been discovering and doing (snorkles, cutting, exhaust, etc.)... Depending on what one does to their bike, it could/can cause it to run either rich or lean.

My question is, how would the average person know if they've caused this? Does the bike just start running crappy (I'd imagine you'd want to know before it got that bad)? Are you only really going to know it if you had it dyno'ed?

it's wise to learn how to 'read' your plugs, they will usually tell the tale.

There are good pictures of lean, rich, and 'just right' plugs in the service manual.

and the way it runs. alot popping on decel is supposed to be a good sign of a lean condition. would figure it to be true since i am fairly sure mine is on the lean side and it does.

My new 05 I just picked up pops alot on the decel, But thought I read that having a race kit can make that more prone to happen too. I know I have some holes drilled in the cover.. is that a bad thing to make it lean?

Blazinc5,
A lean condition is bad for your motor. The factory has to set it to run lean due to EPA mandates.

popping on decel is not always a sign of a lean condition. I highly recommend a dyno run/tune session after
mods to avoid engine damage do to overly lean conditions. Direct Link looks to be the hot ticket in this regard.

I'd hold off on mods until after the big pipe shootout and see how much tuning is required for
the different mods. baseline runs should show how lean a particular combo will make your motor if all goes as planned.
