Ok.. my fan is out of commission. It started a afew weeks ago when the fan was running inconsistently and at more than just the 2 speeds it was set for. It would go fast, slow, fast, slow, off, on, off, slow, fast, off, on, fast, etc... you get the idea. now it doesnt work at all. service manual is telling me i need to replace my ecm. I'm currently running the buell race ecm but I still have my stock unit. My question is: if I replace the unit here in my garage, do I have to go to the dealer and have the tps reset? I cant recall if it holds the setting or not. The stock unit has been unmounted for about a year. | ||

I just pulled my fan out. I would hate to be the guy putting that in on the assembly line. It was the biggest PITA to get out. | ||

i opted for testing the fan on the bike... its a real pain to get at the wires... make that a ROYAL pain... the fan itself functions fine, when you apply 12v it hums right along. That means the speed controller for the fan, ecm in this case, is at fault. The intended voltage is not reaching the load, so its gotta be the ecm. Question stands... does the ecm hold the tps setting or no? And would the ecm being on a shelf for a whole year affect that? | ||

Hate to dissent, but it could also be a ground caused by a pinched or chafed wire in the harness. | ||

you have a spare ecm, takes 4 minutes to exchange. if it came out of your bike, then it is already set for your bike. the last setting is retained. | ||

thanks fullpower, i was mainly worried that after a year on the shelf it might not still have the setting... like a computer motherboard when the battery dies and it loses the cmos settings. Next question is how will the stock ecm perform with the race pipe? | ||

It will be ok for temp use. Should adjust itself. You might be a little lean and won't have the performance that the Race will give you, but for testing purposes, you'll be fine in the short run. | ||

OK...for anyone else doing this I just learned something new, and as such I will share it here: If you have the full race kit and have removed the interactive muffler control from the bike like I have and you engage in this procedure of replacing the race ecm with the stock unit, your check engine light will come on when you run the bike... This is associated with trouble code 21 in the service manual which indicates that the interactive exhaust is non functional. No need to panic when you see the red light. Now I'm going to run the bike and see if the fan works. Wish me luck. (Message edited by pwnzor on February 20, 2006) | ||

Hope it's the wiring and not the ecm. Fan is fed 12V from the cooling fan fuse and is grounded via ecm - OK you proly know that. Also the ecm has a "keep alive" 12V feed via the ecm fuse that I'm pretty sure would be required to operate the ecm to operate the fan after the key is turned off, but if that feed was faulty you'd also have clock resets. | ||

Buy a right side air scoop and forget that noisy fan! Well, really, fix the fan and get a right side scoop! |
