Would seem that I have a very slow leak where the shifter goes in. Was wondering if anyone could tell me if it's worth it to warranty this or if the parts for it are cheap and the work is easy. If so I'd rather do it myself than take it in to the dealer. I'm guessing it's just an O-ring that goes there.

It's a seal Ryan, an easy fix. Coupla bucks.

Sorry I missed you in Gainesville.

No problem. Thanks for the info. If I recall there was a way to replace it without removing the cover. Anyone got the how to?

It's a "OIL SEAL, Shifter shaft" 37101-84A (on a 2003 XB9R)

If you take off the shifter assembly, you can yank the old one out with a hook tool or a pair of snap ring pliers. No primary cover removal required.

Cool, thanks Chainsaw.

I just don't want to have to go through the hassle of getting a date setup to have it worked on under warranty if it's a cheap part and easy work that I can do myself.

I was checking through the service manual and all it shows is one seal there. So I took a look and all I could find was this black seal right before the shifter arm.

I circled in red the area in question. Is that the seal for this?

In this next picture you can see some shine metal behind it. I'm just wondering if my seal came loose and all I will need to do is push it back in. Or would I be better to just replace it?

All in all you can see the oil mist that's been coming out from there.

I'd replace it, but you can try to push it back in. It's only one bolt. The one I have is a copper color.

I've replaced it on my old bike a couple times, and since they're only a couple bucks, I bought two last time.

One word of advice:

If you push a new seal over a splined or nicked shaft, use plastic or tape to cover the part of the shaft that might slice the new seal as you slide it on.
