When I started this thread, I wasn't interested in simply replacing the Buell filter with an equivalent. I was interested in a filter with synthetic media instead of paper resulting in better filtering ability.

Well, good news! AutoZone helped me do some cross-referencing of the Buell filter which gave me two that I feel are much better than the stock filter and are dimensionally identical with anti-drainback and bypass valves:

1) Mobil 1 M1-103 Mobil 1 claims 98% single pass efficiency with particles that are 10 to 20 microns in size.

2) ACDelco UPF 1233 ACDelco claims 98% single pass efficiency with particles that are 8 to 10 microns in size.

AutoZone did not have the UPF 1233 in stock so I purchased the M1-103. After I get the stock filter off, I'll cut it apart and I can do a comparison like Jprovo did.

Stock Harley filters do use synthetic media that filters up to 10 microns.

Skully, the ST4967 filters have "Special synthetic fiber-enhanced filter media" (I'm reading it off the box) the ST4967 also claims 98% single pass efficiency when tested per SAE HS806. H-D also claims synthetic filter media. Since Champion Labs makes both filters (I am 99.9% sure of this) I am not suprised.

Why don't we take this topic over to the Lubrication section of the knowledge vault.

If you want a cheaper and probably a better filter use FRAM filter PH4967 then change often and of course use a really good syntetic oil not that Harley stuff..

Jprovo- "98% single pass efficiency" What size particles? This statement means NOTHING without including particle size. It’s pure marketing hype.

"H-D also claims synthetic filter media" This is ONLY the new TC88 filters. The box my Buell filter came in made no such claims. The Evo filters made no such claims.

"Since Champion Labs makes both filters (I am 99.9% sure of this) I am not surprised." I'm pretty sure you are correct that Champion Labs makes both filters. However, some filter manufacturers make more than one grade of filter so be careful assuming all filters are equal.

Trying to get a "blueprint" and tests of this filter (FRAM is hard to bargain with).

But It's probably more a feeling that FRAM filter is better (same same but different).

Skully, Actually, I said "when tested per SAE HS806". I don't know all that HS806 entails, but form what I can glean off the internet it uses media that is 10-20 microns. HS806 is the industry accepted standard oil filter performance test. Unless you have a standardized test to judge the performance of the filters, the data is useless.

Generally, these are test *methods*, not performance *standards*. I'll see what I can find out.

SAE HS806 is a test standard. It does not dictate particle size. For instance, Fram states on their Tough Guard series,

**Test J1858 for particles >20 microns


I'm not sure what to make of that. We need to see the actual SAE standard. Sounds like it includes accommodations for evaluating filter performance versus a range of different particle sizes. Thus I would agree with Skully that not stating a particle size, at least on the multi-pass efficiency, would be misleading.

The Fram tough guard series appear to be good quality filters; they include a combined synthetic and cellulose media, a screen over the bypass port, and good quality construction. The baseline orange Fram filters however, seem to lack any quality advantage over other generic or bargain filters.

SAE wants $60 each for these standards. I'm setting that money aside for upgrades and dyno runs.

Does anyone on the BadWeb have access to SAE HS806 and/or J1858?

I think that we probably change oil on our "loved ones" long time before it would be really necessary to have a better filter then standard Buell/Fram/etc.

maybe i wrong, can some one give me some facts on the differents please do.

(maybe som grammatic and/or bad spelling but i'm swedish so..)

Blake: by the way,do you have the name/number on that tough guard filter? ;)

The tough guard filter I have is the TG8A. It will fit the Buell, but is larger diameter as it is the equivalent to a Ford filter.

Bosch makes a nice black painted filters that cross to the Buell (including the FL1A or whatever). I got mine at Autozone... looks like an economical high quality traditional filter ($3.75 or something). A decent alternative to the super premium Mobil 1 and Toughguard filters (IMHO) which seemed to be running like $8 around here.

Mainly, its just a quality filter that is easy to find with a good finish in the right color at a decent price.

I don't remember the exact value, and where I found it, but I *do* remember that I found it and was satisfied by it... I seem to remember it being as good or better then all the non ultra-premium (read: $9) filters, and comparable to the Mobil 1 filter. I will try and dig it up again and post it. They look as well made as everything short of the Mobil 1's.

Here is a Honda (2 wheel) guy with the same idea

Here is a honda (4 wheels) that pulled apart the bosch. said it looks just like the Mobil 1, but without a special coating on the paper.

This guy did some calling around and found out the Bosch and Mobil 1 are both made by champion labs, and also got the bypass pressure (11-17 PSID) for the Bosch.
