I HAVE A 06 LIGHTNING SS. THOUGH I LIKE THE CUSHY SEAT, I WOULD LIKE A MORE SPORTY LOOK. HAS ANYBODY TRIED TO A FIREBOLT TAILSECTION ON A LIGHTNING SS? ALSO AMERICAN SPORTBIKE HAS HANDLEBAR CONVERSION KIT TO FIREBOLT STYLE BARS. ANY COMMENTS? | ||

If you're talking about the Crossroads, get them in the 0 degree version. MUCH better than stock. As far as the conversion to the Firebolt ass end, I don't think it's been done on a SS yet. | ||

You can fit the firebolt rear end, although some work will be required. The rear part of your frame is around 1/2" wider than the 'Bolt, so you will either have to set to work with a grinder on the frame or widen the R subframe to fit. I took the latter option using a Racingmotorcycles.com lightweight subframe on our Uly frame, This is cheaper and much lighter than a stock subframe. Downside if you are using it for the street is that it won't support a passenger, but why would you want one of those on your bike? | ||

I have no intension to carry any passengers. The rear foot pegs were the first parts to come off. I will check out that racingmotor sub. ROCKETSPRINK, thanks for the feed back on the bar conversion. | ||

FWIW Chromebob, I just tore my SS apart to try to fit a short S tail on it. I ran into the same problems Trojan did. The subframes were too narrow. An hour of grinding on the subs later, and they fit width-wise. The bolt holes still won't line up though. Had to "ream" out new bolt holes and recesses for washers. That's done now. Mounted up the subs, and the undertray on the S interferes with the Shock location on the SS. May need to have a custom undertray fabbed. Then, I may be able to use the stock SS shock, which has the res. hose on the wrong side, and is way shorter. Other solution would be to swap shocks(have one on the way) Then I have to cram all the lengthened SS wires into a smaller space. My bike is down, and I'm at a crossroads right now. Approaching the point of no return. Not to mention the perfect FL riding weather I'm missing every day. I'm actually considering buying another bike today to ride just so I can take my time with the Buell. Bottom line, anything can be done, with patience and resources. I imagine you will have most of the above problems I've had since the R and S frames and susp. are the same. If you pull it off, document your changes and mods to make it work, maybe save some future converts some time. Good luck, I'm sure it would look kick azz. TK |
