So you are saying that it might be difficult to tune the engine at lower revs that concerns you, not the relative performance of one pipe versus another? Is that correct?

On the formula thing, are you meaning to come up with some kind of objective ratings for low end, mid-range, and top-end performance?

One thing I'd like to see is a dyno drag race simulation similar to what Brian Gardner (Buckinfubba) did but with the RPM and starting points in time at exactly the same point. It sure seems like one should be able to just do that using the existing dyno runs by specifying the starting and ending RPM. Not sure if Dynojet provides that capability though. If not, is there a way to import RPM versus time dyno data into a spreadsheet where we could do the graphing ourselves?

If we can do that, then there will be no need for a calculated factor. We can create/compare dyno drag race performance for any rpm interval we like.

Can we do it?

I'm sitting here talking to Mitch from East Coast Carbon and we're thinking about showing up at the shootout with a new Drummer SS in Carbon Fiber...We're getting ready to make the mold next week. Some design changes are being incorporated for the front cap, but will mount the same way as the SS and still put down the results.....I'll post pricing for these in my sponsor section this weekend....

Blake,
I'm all for doing this right. A formal test procedure and a SINGLE test "captain" is the best way to assure that this occurs. I welcome you generating a formal test procedure that we can review and perfect in advance of the test so we don't have to 2nd guess things during the test.

Just got off the phone with Kevin. What is clear now is that it is time to get the scheduling figured out. Craig is finding out any schedule constraints he has from the dealer side of things.

Here is what I need: Everyone that thinks they are going to be present for this testing needs to send an email to me at sales-at-americansportbike-dot-com. I will put all the names on one email list and we'll start figuring out the best weekend. Before that even starts, I can guarantee that we will likely not find a weekend that everyone that wants to attend can get there. There are some key players that have to be there obviously, but the chance of finding a weekend in the next 60-90 days that works best for everyone is low. We'll figure it out. Send me your email if you're planning on attending or would at least like to be included in the schedule planning. No use trying to do this on this thread.

My preference is that it would occur immediately following a non-AMA race weekend, or even on a non AMA race weekend if possible.

Craig, your store will likely become Buell central for a few days. Not sure about insurance and policy implications with non-employees in the service area. I'm sure we can change pipes in the parking lot if that's what it takes, though I'm not sure I'd want to do that in early March in Iowa (Brrrr!). But obviously a few non-employees are going to be in the dyno room. Figure out what the rules are, what waivers are required, etc. so we can make this work.

I think that this will be a lot of work and a lot of fun. I live for this stuff.....

Keith on sport bikes we do pulls in 5th and use 4th for all other street bikes, it's about keeping the final gear ratio somewhere in the correct range. Al will post the results when were done but it hit 55 ft/ls @ 2700 peaking at 68 at red line. ...It is already higher following the first shot at tuning it. ... More later. ... Terry

There are two targets with some transition cells. I like 13.5 for stock engines and just a little richer for track bikes and racers. But you can not go that rich when using an 02 sensor in the closed loop areas. ... Again Al will post the runs under his American Sport Bike Banner when we are finished. ... I think this is going to be exciting when it finished as a 1200 Big Bore. Two years ago we built and tuned one of Brian's 1050 kits to 102 RWHP using just a PC3 and I think I could have seen 105 if I could of used DL. ... Terry

The first pulls on the XB9 with Micron and American Sport Bike Air Box hit 90 RWHP....

Did you seriously just tell me that? You aren't even finished tuning it yet and you have a 18 RWHP difference over the stock configuration?

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! !!!!!!!!

Two, Four, Six, Eight who do we appreciate? Terry, Terry, yyyaaaaaaaayyyyy TERRY!

Al, Terry, Craig, all: I appreciate all the time and work yall are going to put in... Yall lose me sometimes in the technical details but I trust ya to make the tests even and fair for all the pipes...This should make some interesting reading when it's finished... I"m really looking forward to the results, thanks to all involved again...

Thanks and its things like this pipe shoot-out that make what we do so much fun. ... But I was surprised myself by the XB9's base line run, but then I remembered something Brian once said "Some Dyno's Just Like Them Selves’ a Lot." I think ours is one like that, but it was a good cool day at sea level and the run was corrected to SAE values. ... Terry

Keith, Al will post the runs under his American Sport Bike Banner when we are finished. We just have a few customers who are waiting and wanting to know how it's going. Monday's are light in the Dyno so I should get a lot done tomorrow and we will post as soon as we can. ... Terry

I’m sure we’re all anxious to find out the results of your testing as well as a date of when it’s all going to happen. However, I’m sure there’s an equal number of people that would also like to be able to compare numbers generated from the same pipe using the race ECM compared to that using one of the ‘tuned’ DL ECM’s.

I’d like to suggest that for each test, you pull a couple runs using the standard race ECM set-up prior to tuning one using the DL software. Not only is this how most of us are currently running, but it should be a great sales tool for those getting ready to sell mapped ECM’s. This way we can all see how much power the pipe gives as well as how much additional power can be gotten from a properly tuned one!
