I finally fitted a sport bike front master cylinder to my bike.

It was a relatively easy job, and I think it improves the looks and the functionality of the brakes, because the 5/6" piston is larger than the stock one which is 1/2". I must say I was delighted to get rid of the "coffin", which in addition to being unsightly, prevented properly positioning the brake lever by a small amount.

The part I used was a Nissin 5/8" front brake assembly from a 2002 Suzuki Gxr 600. I got it from my usual supplier, eBay, for $33. There are a lot of these on offer on eBay, they refer to a particular bike and year, but it seems to me that most late model Japanese sport bikes use the same part, or one with small variations that don't matter for this use. Not sure on this though. The piston diameter on Nissin master cylinders is stamped on the underside.

The more prudent Buelligan can purchase the part new from Lockhart Phillips, or your local Yamahondazuki dealer, but it may be gold color: I wanted black to match the clutch. Curiously enough, the lever exactly matches the stock lever, so now I have a spare:-).

The installation was simplicity itself, and I changed the brake fluid while I was at it. Took me and Gerry about an hour, including making a small bracket for the brake fluid reservoir.

I would like to thank all the brothers who kindly offered their experience and photos, especially Race Pilot, who had made a similar installation, and provided detailed information and encouragement, as well as Steath,Rocket, Pepi, 99Buellx1, and Chaconas.

Now I am wondering if anyone has found a replacement for the rather flimsy stock throttle/switch assembly?

now all you need to do is put a sweat band around it like your favorite Moto GP racer.

That's funny.

Bomber, my Ducati buddy, said the same thing.
What are those sweat bands supposed to accomplish?

the fluid is very strong..I know if any gets on your windscreen it will ruin it...much less in your eyes or on your leathers. it's also a great sponsor ship Ad spot...a sweat band with a Buell patch or logo on it would be cool

They absorb any fluid that spills out when the fluid expands from getting hot. Before you think that brakelever is a perfect match, think again, it may APPEAR to match, but after swapping in a "Perfect Match" off an X1 I found that I had to modify the plunger contact point because it was not exactly the same angle and the 2mm was enough to cause the front pads to lock up.

The sweat band is to cover the Sun's UV ray so that the fluid does degrade so quickly.

Now, functionally, how much does it improve? Does this mod actually do anything?

Def check and make sure the lever is contacting correctly, etc, as when I replaced my levers with cf gsxr ones, they needed a slight filing job to be perfect.

And Gentleman, I am also curious as to how it worked, if you decrease the size of the master cyl bore, you will effectively increase the pressure applied to the caliper, other way around will make it feel harder, same as we used to do on our race cars, some guys had a big master and you had to push real hard to make them lock, mine always had a small bore, made it feel like power brakes!

Kid,
Thanks for the info.
The brakes work pretty much the way you anticipated. Not a real big difference however.
Henry,
The mod accomplished it's goals:
1. allow the front brake lever to be adjusted properly: the "coffin" of the stock units interfered with the Laverda clubman bars.
2. Balance the right and left sides visually.
Hey, for thirty three bucks, I would say that was pretty cost efffective:-)
As far as making the brakes work better, that was accomplished by changing the pads to Lyndall Golds, from American Sport Bike.
