I am wondering about checking or setting the ignition timing on an xb12s. The Service Manual says that you must do it with the digital technician thru the ecm. Can this be done with a timing light the old fashioned way?

Nope.
If you're good you can check it with a DMM.

I noticed that with the key on the fuel pump will cycle as soon as the ECM receives a signal from the cam sensor. so actually you would just need to listen for the fuel pump to cycle and look at the mark.
with the engine running I would emagine there would be some advance, buell dose not give specs for running timing do they?
Oh, I have tried checking timing once and found that with the spark plugs in it is very difficult because of engine compression pushing the crank back (really good piston sealing)
so I'm going to check it when I pull the plugs at 10k
