I recently purchased a used 2003 XB9s with 7000 miles on it. Would it be safe to switch over from Harley HD-360 20w50 (which it has always used)to one of the better synthetics at this point and mileage ? Looking at Syn-3 or Mobil 1.
Thanks,
PM Clark

I switched my bike to Mobil 1 15/50 in the engine and Mobil 1 75/90 gear lube in the transmition at 500 miles. I now have 24,500 miles on it with 0 problems.

In other words, you'll be fine.

I switched at 5K. No issues to report. Get it and check it often when you first put it in because mine had a tendency to burn more of the syn3 than the dino when I first switched to it.

I was once told that when switching to synthetics It is a good idea to change the oil again after a couple of hundred miles as the oils can "react" with each other in a negative way. No idea if this is really true or not but makes sense to me.

you guys talk about "switching" as if it is some religious conversion or something. its just oil, the bike doesnt care. put clean oil in as often as you care to, change the filter too. it is not like a sex change or anything.

Fullpower, Take the time to read all the threads on oil. It is way more complicated than religion or a sex change............

I'll make it simple, yes, you can switch. Choose any good synthetic you want to use.

I am firmly in the synthetic camp. I always switch to synthetic on the very first oil change...whether it is at the first oil change while breaking in a bike or a used bike...and then I change oil (and filter) about every 2,500 miles unless the odometer rolls over while I am on a trip. Stuff may not break down as quick as fossil oil, but it still gathers pollutants and impurities...part of its job.

Lots of articles on oil, but one of the most recent was in American Iron, November '05 issue, starts on page 32.
