OK -- long term research question here --

I understand that Uly bogs won't bolt up to a 12Ss frame -- what's to keep one form bolting a Uly rear subframe (and seat, et al) to a 12Ss, and then bolting the Uly bags?

anything (other than cost)?

No.
Of course since I tend to be proven wrong at times, I reserve the right to be corrected.
But, from what I understand this "tail swap" is basically what Trojan did with his Uly Super Moto, only he went from Uly tail to Ss tail.

You thinkin' 'bout getting off that ol' Tuber?

Heaven Forfend!

Nosirree, Glitch -- however, I've managed to take a great general purpose scoot and turn it into a cafe-racing, apex-strafing bobber . . . . I love the silly thing, but it's usfulness as a mile eater of homeric proportions is iffy at best -- I'll keep it for those Sunday morning Dawn Partol missions, but riding it to the Gap would be, er, ill-advised for these middle-aged bones

I'm looking/planning/researching for the next pusrchase -- since we got my wife her Bonnie, she's lobbying for more and longer trips (poor me, I know!)

three more semesters and the family revenue stream will increase significantly -- a boy's gotta have a dream, yes?

In the on-line chat session with the Buell engineers last year, this question was asked and one of the engineers stated that at full suspension compression the XB12Ss rear wheel would contact the underseat compartment on the Uly rear end. I guess you could just live with that, or perhaps mod the compartment for clearance.

Who

thanks for the data -- I NEVER mod anything I ride (tongue firmly in cheek) --

I've ridden neither of the bikes -- rode a 9 and 12 S, liked em both -- this spring, will have to try the Ss and X (and a few others)

thanks for the data -- data is always good!

Increase the prelaod or fit an aftermarket rear shock with ride height adjustment. Other than that it would be a simple swap.

Found the transcript of the chat session in the archives; here's the relevant Q&A:

benandcindy: Is the tail section and windscreen adaptable to the 12S ?

John: No, they are not directly adaptable to the 12S (or 12Ss either). Due to the long travel suspension on Ulysses, we've moved some of the components in the tail around to give as much trunk space as possible. If you put the Ulysses tail components on a Lightning, the rear tire will end up hitting some of those components on hard bumps. The Ulysses windscreen also will not directly fit a Lightning due to the differences in size of the front fairings between the two bikes.

Plus the big Uly bags mounted on the 12Ss might tend to scrape at vigorous lean angles?

Bomber, here is a suggestion. Over in the Big Bad & Dirty, we have found the manufacturer of the Uly Bags. They are really Hepco Becker Journey bags which is a German company. An outfit called EuroTech out of CA is there distributor here in the U.S.A. They are getting me bag liners and the silver trim piece I screwed up when I low sided with the bags on in November. Buell said you can't get them, but I found the part's list with numbers on the website and Eurotech is getting it for me.

Hepco Becker also makes a 50 liter top case that will bolt up to the Uly rack. They advertise that the top case can hold two helmets.

Anyway the Uly bags actually can be installed on many bikes. I did not see anything about Buell on their website, but I wouldn't be surprised if that is part of the sales agreement. Maybe Chris at Eurotech can get the ball rolling for a rack system that will fit on other Buells.
