My 9R fouled a plug, for the second time since I've had it, yesterday. It fouled one at the shop before Daves could load it on the truck. I took it for a ride on Tuesday and it seemed to run fine. Yesterday it was 45 degrees so I decided to try again. The bike turned over but only seemed to be firing on one cylinder. Has this happened to anyone else?

I also noticed that whenever I've started the bike the exhaust smells very rich. I have done no mods to the exhaust or intake. Is it possible for the fuel injection to be too rich? Could this be fouling my plugs? Can the fuel injection be tweaked to lean it out a little?

Thanks,
Schmitty

While you're starting the bike, are you twisting your right wrist?

Are you waiting for the needles to sweep and the VTwin red light (in between Green Neutral light and Red Oil light)to go out before you hit the start button?

Also, when stopping the engine are you using the Kill Switch and not the key.

The handbook specifies both procedures

My dealer told me when he delivered the bike to always let the "engine" light go out before starting it. Makes sense because that's when the ECU is running its diagnostics.

no it does not "do diagnostics" the dealer may well have told you absolutely anything.
to disprove that myth, i have several times depressed and held the START button prior to turning on the key switch, to assure instantaneous start, before the gauges sweep, and before the warning lamp extinguishes. it starts instantly and immediately, with zero deleterious effects.
Back to the original issue of a fouled plug.
first thing to do is replace the plug, make sure the plug wire is in good condition, and be sure that hot idle speed is set correctly at 1100 rpm (plus or minus 50) be sure NOT to twist the throttle before or during cranking, and also if you were previously in the habit of twisting the throttle when the vehicle is not in motion, try to break yourself of the habit.

Fouling at startup is a problem for the XBs. Some do, some never do. Mine did, especially on cold mornings.
Iridums fixed mine. It's been a year with zero trouble. However, DO NOT TOUCH THE THROTTLE at start up.

I'm picking the bike on Weds night so we can fix it.

As with any fuel injected motor, I don't touch the throttle at start up. Hopefully I won't foul plugs.

Now, my flat slide equipped Ducati is another story all together.

Thanks a lot Dave.

Anybody tried the Buell Pro-Series plugs? Are they any better? Are they worth the money?

What...12hp? That is some serious gain from plugs.

I can honestly say the Pro-Series have provided better performance, easier startups (provided the TPS is also properly adjusted), and looked better when being replaced than the standards. I ran the standards, then the Pro-Series, then new standards, then new Pro-Series in 5000 mile increments and each time the Pro-Series looked just about right as far as color and the standards were quite a bit darker each time.

In addition after about 2000 miles I could tell a difference in starting between the standards and Pro-Series with the standards being a little harder to start.

Are the pro-series plugs just private labeled iridiums, or are they something special?
