Man I hate when your riding some good roads and really start to get into it, and then as you exit out of a turn and you hauling butt you notice staring right at you in the on coming lane is a sheriff car!
No ticket today or even pulled over but was a little buzz kill.

Can you get a speed ticket for hauling a-- but without being clocked on a radar, or paced behind?

In some states all they need to do is estimate your speed.
They even go as far as training the officers and test them on the ability to estimate speed.
The officers have to be less than 5mph off on several successive tests from several different vectors or fail certification.
If certification test is failed they are not allowed to issue tickets based on estimates.
I forget which states were doing this. I saw it on some police training program.

They do that here in Kansas, they call it basic speed...no speed number is on the ticket..just that you were obviously speeding....

There was a case somewhere where they had the cop on the stand and he said he was trained to lust look and see how fast a car was going...The lawyer bounced a racket ball on the ground caught it and asked the cop how fast the ball was moving...Case dismissed? Urban myth? I don't know but it sounds poss.

Good ol' New12r got lucky this day at Deals Gap.

He's got a big print of this in his living room.
Cops can give you a ticket for going too fast for conditions no matter what the conditions are. I got one, the conditions listed on the ticket were, clear weather, light to no traffic, blacktop...that one cost me a half a week's pay.

myth. any judge, or the cop himself, would point out a vehicle and a raquet ball are entirely different, and that frame of reference is key as well.

Great pic Glitch!

You know what I hate!

Is when you're riding some good roads and really start to get into it, and pull up on some redneck jackasz driving an ford truck pulling a horse trailer, with horse dung falling out, and the dude wont go more than 40mph!

Thats the kinda frustration that makes me want to sell my bike, and take up chess, or something!

I got a too fast for conditions ticket. I got clocked wheelying at 55 on Ortega Hwy. The cop didn't want to give me the misdemeanor wreckless type ticket because I was not an a-hole, so he gave me too fast for conditions, stating that safe conditions on one wheel are zero mph, so I was doing 55 over that. Since it made no sense when it got downtown I just got traffic school.

That is a GREAT picture! That looks suspiciously like Deal's Gap.

edit: duh, now after reading the post under the picture I realize it IS Deal's Gap. I assume it was a weekend? I don't play there on weekends, weekdays only for me.

I got one of those "Basic Speed" tickets in Kansas last year. Glad they used it instead of "C and I". I blew past a moving Harley Cop going 120 on the interstate. Didn't even know it was a cop until I ran into some congestion up ahead. He was right behind me and was really nice to me considering my rate of speed. I have since slowed down and only speed around curves for the most part.

In '89 when I was a student riding a Honda Elite 250 scooter (top speed of 60 mph with tail wind) I had a cop write me a ticket claiming he "visually" assessed my speed at around 80, but would only write me for 69 in a 50.

I went to court with a written statement from the Honda dealer that it couldn't go that fast. I presented the statement, and invited anyone in the court to take it for a ride and if they could get it to go over 60 I'd gladly pay the ticket.

The judge basically said tough crap I believe the officer and only reduced the fine slightly. Didn't help with the insurance rates though.

Boy was I pissed. IMO there is little to no justice in traffic court.

I'll be visiting our local district court on the 24th of this month. Seems the constabulary has charged me with 92 MPH in a 60 MPH zone. There is some reference to his laser gun, 1384', a curve, speeding. HAHAHA. I'll be letting my lawyer handle that one.

The only connection I have with that picture is it's a good friend of mine. Charlie, he goes by New12r here on the board. Just in case some got me wrong, I didn't take the picture, and it's not me riding (like I could keep up with Charlie).
Anyway, there's a hi-res version on Killboy's website.
