Was the bike hot when you drained it?

No! But I put two quarts of oil in rode it around for 10 15 min and drained it again. Coming out a bit cleaner but still had some chunks.

I'd definitely continue to flush it like you have been, except get it up to temp first, until it comes out clear.

Is the fan turning on ok?
That seems like a pretty short amount of time to roast the oil.

If it is cold the regular oil will seem nastier and thicker than usual of course.

I changed my oil at 500, 1000, and 2000 miles, and never had a problem like that.

Switch to synthetic if you haven't already.

no offense intended , but you may want to change oil more frequently in winter, and/or if bike is subjected to lots of short trips, running around town with cold engine. takes a good 20 minutes of hiway speed to warm up all my air-cooled iron.

What did the magnetic drain plug look like?

I thought something was wrong at 500mi(first change). Whole-lotta metal junk on there. After that, not much at all.

That could be a clue as to whether or not the oil has ever been changed.

After running 4 quarts of oil threw it, it came out clean. I changed oil filter and put mobile 1 V-twin in it. Im changing the plugs also. Fullpower, no offense taken I just bought the bike yesterday.

Do you guys have any good words for Amsoil. We have been hearing some pretty dramatic claims here in oz and I am wondering if its all true.

I have used amsoil in everything I own.I can honestly sat it makes a difference. The bike runs cooler,SHIFTS BETTER, and makes less noise.I still change my oil at 3k,just cuase. Amsoil says you can upwards of 7500 depending on your riding. But, even at 3.90 a quart its still cheaper than an engine or transmission. My dad runs it in his road tractor, and get this he says it another 500 rpms on top, thats pretty go on a big truck. I guess my is it works! Try it.

The only reason I use mobile 1 instead of Amsoil, is availability. I can go right down to the AutoZone and pic some up. Amsoil is hit or miss were im at as far as being able to purchase it. I belong to a V-rod forum also and there has been some amazing stuff posted about amsoil

It is impossible to find Amsoil for v-twins around here, and my local motorcycle shop charges $11.99 a quart for Mobil 1 v-twin. What a rip off.

Go on line.. You can get the preferred customer thing fairly cheap.
I run Amsoil in 3 bikes and my truck so it is worth the cost of the preferred customer fee.
Bikes run 20F cooler and much less engine noise.

All these claims about amsoil being better are regarding amsoil versus regular dino oil right? I have never seen any concrete evidence (other than from amsoil that amsoil is really significantly better than Mobil 1 or other premium synthetics.

Synthetics are better yes, but is amsoil any better than the others? Dunno 'bout that. And yes, I've read the whitepapers etc. and looked at the specs for amsoil versus Mobil 1. The amsoil comparo uses some other, older Mobil 1 with different specs than the current specs from Mobil 1. Comparing current specs shows the specs are very close, each a bit better in some areas but not anything material IMO.

I can buy Mobil 1 15w-50 at Walmart 5 qt. jug for $26.00 - I can't find the VTwin anywhere though. The differences are very small too - Mobil pushes the Vtwin for motorcycles but they offer very little concrete reason - looking at the specs the vtwin gives you a couple degrees more before breakdown etc. but both surpass any heat you would experience without your bike going into skip-spark anyway and both have very similar friction modifiers etc.

Lonnie,
20W50 conventional oil will get thick when cold.

I don't trust any of the marketing spiel put out by Amsoil. Too much slick willy sales bunk. They may have a great product, but the BS marketing spiel turns me off to it. They do seem to be improving on that count though. Bottom line, be wary of any "test results" provided by the folks selling the product.
