Harleybritt,
You may perceive it that way; I'm not sure everyone would though. When Don Canet of Cycle World tested the Interceptor and the Firebolt on his Supermotard style street/handling course, the Firebolt embarrassed the Interceptor by over 2 seconds. So I guess the perception of "a lot more bike" depends on the type of bike you want and what kind of riding you do. The Interceptor is a great bike. I guess it does have a lot more... a LOT more weight, a LOT more complexity, a LOT more maintenance.

Your Firebolt didn't run well in Miami? I wonder why?

How do you know it was "running hot"? Do you mean that you noticed a lot of heat being shed by the engine or that it was overheating?

In what scenario would it "backfire alot"?

Do you crack the throttle when starting it?

Which brake pads needed replaced, front or rear?

Good luck with the Interceptor. Let us know how you like it.

1845 miles on my XB9R, purchased 5/30/02. One blown tail light bulb, replaced with automotive 1157 bulb. Modified my own side stand. No other problems.

blake: in answer to your questions.
1: the honda is only a 781cc bike as compaired to a 984cc.so how can that be a fair comparison?also it wieghs 483lb compaired to the bolt at 445lb,so ill eat less burgers. i'm not into the racing scene so i dont think the wieght thing matters ,does it?
maintenance mmmm well i do my own services, and as i recall i think jap bikes don,t break down as much as buells,do they?
the engine over heated alot, and i don,t crack the trottle when i start it ,if i did it would backfire and not start.it would backfire when i changed from 1st to second and try to excellerate.also sometimes in traffic.both sets of brake pads are going to be replaced they proberbly dont need it yet but i like to sell the bike with a new set.after 30yrs of rideing both pro and amature i think i have a little knowledge,i am not knocking the firebolt i thought i would try it and have just decided that its not what im looking for.this is all just my opinion.

Harleybritt,

My XBR9 is hard to start when it is fully warm. I have always been able to just open the throttle a bit and it comes right to life, with no backfire. I never get backfire between shifts. The closest thing I get to a backfire is the few times I have almost stalled the bike, it will make a little pop. More throttle has always solved that for mine. Mine was ridden daily in 100 + weather this summer in Austin and it never overheated. Sounds like your bike might have some issues that most don't. The interceptor is a nice bike, although I am not sure I would go with the ABS brakes.

12,000 mi. and I have never had a problem starting my XB cold, warm, or blazing hot. Matter of fact, I'm amazed at how quickly it fires to life after hitting the starter button. If you're have any type of starting problem, get it back to the dealer and let them Diagnose it! When it comes to the FI, the dealer is the only one who has the tools to figure out what's wrong.

"i'm not into the racing scene so i dont think the wieght thing matters ,does it?"

Racing or not, a lighter bike will do everything a motorcycle is supposed to do (accelerate, turn, stop etc.) better than a heavier bike. I don't race, but I like a responsive bike that does exactly what I want it to.

I did my first 1,000 miles in extreme Miami heat with aboslutely NO starting/overheating problems.

The fan would run on quite a while after shutting down, but I think it's supposed to do that.

Even with the new ECM and without the TPS reset my 'bolt started/ran just fine.

I don't really consider mine as having a starting problem. When it is cold I start it by just hitting the starter with the throttle closed all the way. When it is fully warm, like if I shut the bike off for maybe 3-4 minutes after a ride, then start it up again, I crack the throttle open just a bit, and it starts right up. It has never failed to start pretty quickly. When warm, it doesn't start as easily if you don't crack the throttle just a bit.

Harleybritt,

I think it is just a control thing for me. I am sure they stop better. From what I've read in reviews they just feel soft. I'm probably just resisting change. However, if you get a chance to ride on with and one without abs do it. I've ridden a couple of goldwings with linked brakes and didn't care for that either. I think a couple of the MC mags reviewed the abs recently. I'll see if I still have the issues.

Is that red, white, and blue color on your chin fairing a vinyl sticker or is that paint? Looks good!

Mileage Check: Purchased 10-30-02

14 total miles on odo

Bike has started fine both times I've tried, bike has never overheated, no clicking from the brake, bike hasn't fallen over, no backfiring.

<---that's me being a smart arse.

Yep it's true. While I can't ride yet (broken leg) that didn't stop me from going out and buying a new XB9R today

Welcome to the darkside Timbo!

Hogman:
Thanks! Vinyl decal, the opposite side looks pretty cool, bigger area. The white is reflective (like a highway sign) Works well in headlights to keep the cagers aware of my happy ass.

Harleybrit,
The new VFR is 557 LBs wet. Your 483 LB number for the VFR is the dry (shipping) weight. The XB9R is 385 LB dry, 455 LB wet. Apples to apples makes for the best comparisons eh? :) You are talking an extra 100 LBs. Not a bid deal on the highway, actually a good thing on a touring bike. Through the twisties though, it might matter, especially with your pro background.

Has your XB9R broken down? I expect the XB9R to be a very reliable motorcycle.

Again, what makes you think that the engine was "overheating"? As far as I know the thing can idle in a box in the high desert on a 110F day in direct sun and not overheat, ever. When the fan comes on, it is simply the forced air cooling system keeping the engine within the optimum operational temperature range. The engine is not overheating.

Sounds like your TPS and/or cam position sensor timing may be off slightly. Did you have it checked as prescribed by owners manual?

Sorry you don't like the bike. Thanks for your reports. Good luck with the VFR. Got VTec? :)

HarleyBritt,

Sorry you are disappointed in the bolt. Did you have any problems with the handlebar mirrors or turn signal mods. I have not converted mine yet. The bar end weights (plastic inserts) on my bike are not too stable. They both came off when I took off the grips. They turn very easily and I am afraid that the weight of the mirrors will cause them and the mirrors to fall off.

I personally also don't run properly, and backfire alot, whenever I leave Georgia. Even when kept full of fluids.

eddie you have to take the bar ends out and get the addapters for the mirrors.they insert into the bar ends.they are very stable.you can move your controls in and clamp the mirrors on the end but have to cut the grips.

I have looked everywhere for the adapters for the mirrors that insert into the handlebars. Where can I find them.

He looks "more at home" on the Bolt than the Lightning. On the XB9S, he looks like I feel when I ride a friends Blast! My guess is he's around 5'10" or 5'11"

cool pictures.

Looking at the ergos, an XB9S with a tad lower bars would be an awesome track bike ... like I needed another bike in the collection :0
