People do not like to wear helmets and it is so stupid. Our family lost a great person a few years back. She was my sister-in -law and I loved her like my own sister. Jumped on the four wheeler to go see a neighbor. Flipped it and bumped her head on the pavement. Just hit her head in one spot but that spot had something to do with regulating your body temperature. I was standing at her side when she passed away. Now when I see kids riding four wheelers with out any protection I wonder what their parents are thinking.

They are toys. Dangerous toys.

Just remember, gear does not stop at a helmet...

Yes, a helmet is only a part of your gear.

I never assume that I will never go down. To me, gear is just good risk management.

Regarding helmets, the most common areas of impact are the cheek areas of the face bar--I don't just wear a helmet, I wear a full-facer, whenever I'm on the bike...

Jacket, long pants, boots and gloves are all crucial as well. I just went down for the second time in under two years and gear saved me (probably literally) again. Body parts that would have taken a major beating in this crash were head (got high-sided and landed on it!) left shoulder arm and both hands. My Icon Hooligan gloves have serious divits out of the knuckle and wrist armor. My helmet has some good gouges out of it and my jacket is pretty scuffed up. The scary thing is, even though none of my skin touched asphalt, I still have heavy rash on my forearm, hip, knee on the left side and some rash on the back of my right calf. The bruises on my hip are pretty horrific looking too. I don't even want to think about what kind of damage I would have taken in shorts, t-shirt and sneakers, like I see so many people riding in here in South FL......

It is truly amazing the excusses you hear from the non wearers of their gear...'cant see right, can't hear good, the extra weight will break my neck...ect, ect'
Who ever goes out for a ride saying...'well today I'm going to dump it so I better get my stuff on.'
You are all right, gear does not stop with the helmet, and there is no reason not to have good equipment now because of the heat, Vanson and others make real good vented jackets that work great.
A short save my bacon story...on a 750 Ducati around 1979, around 60mph, a poncho bed roll held on to the guage cluster with two bungee cords, with my Nikon in it, (what a fool I was!!)well one cord failed, and flipped the roll between the front fender and bottom of the headlight. In that first instant it was 'oh crap, loosing my camera,' then the camera bottomed out between the lite and the flimsy mounted fender, bent the mounts to make a perfect tire locking brake. And in a split second the bike went end over end, with me in the middle. I had full Vanson leathers on, and a old Bell Star full face helmet, and Bates gloves. Somewhere in the tumble I did a couple of face plants, and wrenched off a compleatly laced up army jump boot from my right foot. My left knee cap got wacked by the bike some where, and tore it up, but no road rash, or broken bones...nice shinner though, as the helmet was ground flat in two spots... And I hopped right up and was able to get the bike started up and ride it home the couple blocks to my house...If I had survived the fall and tangling with the bike, I most certinly would have been majorly disfigured and really messed up with out good, full gear. Hey call me a wimp or what ever, but I ride right by the organ doners stopping at the NH border to take off their helmets so they can ride 'free'...You guys know the types....

Yes, gear, all of it, 100%. It's just common sense.
On that note, I could not believe my eyes today.
I went for a ride, and had to bundle up. It was about 35 when I left, and warmed up to about 50 by the time I was getting home. I was at a stop sign and a Harley was coming up from the left. I check out his bike and notice that the guy is wearing SHORTS!.. I could not believe what I was seeing.
His doo-dads had to be FREEZING.

A good rule of thumb is if you are riding something that is faster than you can run, wear full gear.

I wiped out at 25-30mph a month ago in full gear. This guy in Florida ended in the hospital, I ended up with a swollen ankle and two swollen toes, nothing broken. I'll go with the gear. I hope this guy recovers.

Welll.... I pretty much agree....but when I'm decending at 50 + mph in a (bicycle road)race with about 50 other racers and we're inches apart, handlebar to handlebar, bouncing off each other, I'll always have on my helmet; but pretty much everthing else has, at most, a thin covering of lycra. Sure the wrecks are brutal but usually it results in some lost skin and maybe the odd break. Sometimes I ride my Buell wearing a little less than full gear. I guess I've just become a little used to the risk of losing some skin.

It's an old expression about parachutes and guns (also applies to safety gear):

If you ever need it - and don't have it, you'll probably never need it again.

And guys...please, please make the kids wear them on the ATV's. I was working with MedFlight three years ago during the Christmas season. We flew at least three kids that day that didn't make it, and ALL of them were taking their very first ride on an ATV that they got on Christmas morning!!

Okay, written Ebonics. I forgot about that.

I was still living in Kalifornia when the Oakland school board demanded that Ebonics be taught in public schools. Incredibly enough, common sense prevailed and they decided that mainstream American English was good enough.

Hell, I wish bicycle helmets were around when I was kid. I might have had a triple digit IQ at one time, but I'm pretty sure I knocked a digit off years ago.

Here's a helmet for all my fastidious spellers out there.

The post was started by a gentleman that saves lives everyday thus reminding everyone to ride with a lid. That's a message that shouldn't get denigrated through deprecations of improper usage, form, and spelling.

snip "a gentleman that saves lives everyday" snip

IMHO: if you can't spell "certified" you ought not be "certified", eh.
BTW: Spelling words properly is not fastidious. More to the point the word was not misspelled. It was the WRONG use of the word, oh righteous one.
