warning .. verbose post:

lowsided into median .. bent right fork tube .. snapped upper triple .. ins. wrote off bike .. dealership told me its as easy as a new front end (after they did report) to fix .. i took bike back & cut chk - done deal now.

my question:

i took out forks & triples & discovered steering stem tube (attached to lower triple) was bent back & to right side, when viewed front on); sighting down neck of frame - thru stem hole - it appears perfectly straight, however the one of the stops at base of frame neck (left on) has slight compression of material & the lower triple was scored (3/8") by base of frame neck hitting the lower triple in its middle.

since the top triple snapped clean off, it wld appear that the frame neck area flexed down during compression of front end into median & (i am hoping) recovered - due to strength & amt of material at knuckle of frame its orginal shape?!

any informed thoughts on this, as i can't find anyone who can totally corroborate likely damage. all say: put a new front end on it & see how it rides.

when viewed from above etc, it appears straight & there is no discoloration in the powdercoating on frame, no dings & no cracks in evidence, which i am assuming is from the top triple failing to protect frame.

i guess i am alone on this??!!

appreciate greatly any considered input & wish u all a safe & peaceful holiday.

The front of the frame is pretty tough.
I'm thinking you will be ok.

The one and only perfect answer is to contact a reputable Motorcycle Frame alignment shop and have it done digitally.

Now having said that, after my accident, put on a new upper and lower triple, along with new head bearings top and bottom, everything stayed consistant through out the sweep of the forks and nothing odd was felt when riding. Release the bars at speed and the bike continued along as straight as the road, no waver no shake.

Vonsliek,

Having had the chance to "crash test" the XB 3 times now at varying speeds up to well over 100... I can say that snapping the triples is NOT a cause for concern. UNLESS you're running some sort of aftermarket triples. The stock triples are DESIGNED to break before they break the frame/tank (BIG problem if you tear the front of the tank open)

This pic was my first racing crash - a low-side at about 110-125 in turn 8 at Willow Springs. That frame still races as it is - dents and all.

Crash pic

(Wycked, I can't bring myself to look at those pics! - GAWD!!!) - but it does show how the triples do let go before ripping the tank open.

The triples are designed to breakaway yeah.As was the case/w my X1.At the first reassembly of that bike i had a nationwide company called "GMD Computrack" check it out just for safety sake. They did the whole job for $700. well worth it.My headstock was somewhat tucked under and to the right.Excellent people.

I am well aware of what 'old bean' means, but it fit better with the follow up to have it refer to the bean between the ears : )

None of the metal is going to be removed until April or May at the earliest. Just not healing as fast as I used to...

The Buell as some of you emailed, landed on eBay after I traded it in on 4 wheels that will make it easier on this bent folded and mutilated body to be able to get to work once the holidays have passed.
