We have one on our Supermoto. Yes it is loud, but runs beautifully. Ours also has an open airbox which makes it sound even louder though.

You might want to take a look here:

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/17143/162217.html?1134657132

read the whole thread.

I like the sound, one of the best sounding Buell mufflers ever built. And fueled correctly, probably the best performing, both in terms of top numbers AND curve shape. I hit 99RWHP, and when I'm done tuning, I'll be at 101 RWHP, I'm quite sure. With NO internal engine mods, just airbox and exhaust.

I would put the sound between a D&D and a Buell Race muffler, both sound an tone wise. Not as loud or percussive as the D&D, not as quiet and "wiffy" as the Buell race muffler. If I had to say which slip-on it sounds closest to, I'd say the Latus. But not many folks have heard that one as a reference.

Fit is excellent. Welds are OK structurally, could be nicer looking. Headers are interesting looking, you either love them or you don't. But they work VERY well.

For the next few I have left, they're only $699. After those are gone, $799.

I don't recall seeing a comparison on your build up Al, but I was curious about the HP difference between the full Micron setup and say just a good slip-on muffler. If both setups were using an open air system and race ECM would the Micron be a better bang for the buck than say a D&D muffler on the stock pipes?

I thought Al's Ulysses with the Micron had a very deep rumble like a Corvette or something. I definitely was a different sound than the Jardine I'm running.

thanks for the feedback guy's, i like the idea that it rumbles like a vette!.
if you take the servo out does it affect the bottom end response?, or doesnt it make much differece. i'm guessing that with a pipe and filter here, i wont need to give the motor any more fuel as everything run's very, very, rich . does the race ECM give anymore rpm?.
as i see that the sportser has a screamin eagle module that raises rpm to over 7000.

i have the latus slip on and it sound GREAT! it is pretty loud. a lot louder than the race muffler.
it has a very deep grumble to it. you can feel the rumble in your chest. performance wise it made my 12scg a little more peppy. i love it! but most people have never heard of it. i got mine from al at americansportbike
but the micron looks like it would be really nice too. but $699 is a lot of money...
latus was $399

merry xb-mas every body

Just to keep the products being discussed here "apples to apples", please remember that the latus being described here is a basic slip-on at $399, versus a fully hydroformed, complete header system (primaries and muffler) from Micron.

Given the performance difference, the $300 should be considered as some of the least expensive HP ever given to a Buell!

I've got the Serpent on my XB9R, and to say that I am happy with it would be a huge understatement. It sounds great! Al's comparison between the Race pipe and the D&D is right on the money. In my experience, you should definately use it with the Race ECM at minimum. Tuning it with the new Direct Link tuner would be best, judging from Al's testing. Right now I'm sitting at a solid 6 hp gain on my XB9, and after I install my FAST system and custom tune the ECM I should be sitting pretty. This pipe is well worth the nuggets in my opinion.

Do you need to rotate the engine to get that system on?

No. There are excellent instructions included. There is quite a bit of disassembly required, and you have to "drop" the front of the engine enough to wiggle the rear header off and put the new one on. Installation will probably take about four to five hours if you haven't done it before.

well it looks like it's swinging me towards the micron, but is their anymore rpm to be found with the race ecm ?, or is that a no-no with the buell.

I think the Race ECM on the XB9 gives you another 500 rpm. Not on the XB12 though.

The race ECM does not alter the hard rev limit on an XB9.

Steve and Al,

Can you get just the headers or do you have to get the complete system? If you can get just the headers what is the price?

Doubtful. You would have to do some serious customization to get the headers to fit another pipe. The system was engineered as one piece, so it might not do you much good to go that route. Is there something you don't like about the silencer?

Naw nothing against the silencer, I would just like to be able to switch between headers and different cans. There are a lot of choices to pick from on the muffler side, but nothing on the header side unless you want a full Force or Micron system. I just don't want to drop $700 to $1000 in one sitting, it would be nice to buy a header and then when there is some more cash decide what pipe you would like to get.

My roommate got a Force header on ebay for cheap and has a Jardine pipe, I love the look of the Force Header.

Just trying to be different again. Only an idea.

I think the micron has a dual outlet header. No other option on the can except maybe custom.

Yes, its two pipes all the way to the silencer. I don't think any other can would fit it without alot of custom work.

I haven't tried to procure just the headers, but as Pete said, no other muffler would fit it anyway. The muffler has an internal collector in it, each header is independent right into the muffler.

It is not wise to think of it in this way. This pipe is an engineered full SYSTEM. The power gains and excellent sound are a product of the combination of both the headers and the muffler. And the fit is excellent, they did a good job of getting everything to fit just right.

Brett,
Terry is sending me a couple plots to help answer your question. My guess is that the best of the available slip-ons out there are going to top out on a 12 in the 96-97 RWHP with a race ECM and the open airbox kit. I'm sure someone can find some dyno plots to prove that wrong, as absolute numbers on Dyno's can be all over the place. The D&D is not a pipe with top end emphasis, so I suspect it will not be in the same league as the Micron up near red line.

It will be interesting to see what people are able to get out of the existing slip-ons once they start tuning with DirectLink to optimize the ECM to the pipe. I plan on doing the shop XB9 with a D&D as soon as I can get it onto a tuning dyno, I've long suspected there is some HP hidden up top on with the D&D that proper fueling should help unlock.

But it is important to de-emphasize the top numbers, and focus more on the torque curve shape. THAT'S what you feel every day on the bike, and THAT is what DirectLink is going to help with more than anything. The Buell Race ECM is optimized for the Buell race muffler, and we saw a HUGE difference with the Micron running the stock Race ECM vs running a TUNED Race ECM. In the next few weeks, we'll see the same results with the Micron on a tuned STOCK ECM.

Thanks Al for the reply.

Yeah, I agree on the outright horsepower number being misleading compared to what is the best for street riding. Right now I have a race kitted XB12R and wanted to add an open airbox and cover to it, and a different muffler to make a better corner to corner grunt rocket. I'm keeping my options open right now, but am watching with keen interest on your and other peoples mods.

Your going to cost me some bucks early next year. But that's okay!

I had posted in a previous thread the need of having the muffler and the headers "work together", and not cause the "valleys and HP losses" that most slip-ons create when bolted onto the XB's.

What you do see in the HP curve from Al's testing of the Micron Hydroformed Serpent system is that when the headers and the muffler are doing what they are supposed to be doing "together", and good engineers have matched them to the design of the motor, you end up with a curve that is making better HP and torque EVERYWHERE that matters!

Performance is added at every level of riding, which is what you are supposed to be paying for, not trying to figure out why you are losing HP in some part of the curve.

Very unsure how "swapping" mufflers and headers will end up working, but our guess is not very well for the expense or effort involved?

None of the slip-ons have had 500 miles of dyno tuning or remapping and it will be interesting to see the results in the future, any type of exhaust will be a compromise without proper tweaking.....whether it be a slip-on, a header swap, or full system....most full systems have to be tuned to be optimized...

does anyone know where to find a sound clip of the micron serpent system on an XB12, I would like to hear what it sounds like. The numbers look good though. I want something with a lot of noise making abilities, I am still a young buck!!like the noise!!!

You may need to download a new Codec to play this file. I had to find a MPEG-2 codec to make it work on my PC.
