I ride in all weathers and the short front fender on my city X throws all of the muck from the road onto the front of the engine.
Does anyone know of a fender extension or longer fender that would stop this. Something the length of the lower fender on a ulysses but with the front of the lighting as well.

American Sport Bike http://www.americansportbike.com/ lists a carbon fiber front fender but I think it is stock length.

I know I've seen an extended one on the 'net somewhere, but can't find the link.

I know what you mean. I never ride in the rain if I can avoid it, but I still have a lot of dirt on the front of my motor.
Perhaps you could take a ULY lower front fender, and a standard Lightning front fender, in black say, and fit them together somehow.
Not having a ULY easily to hand, I am not sure how this would be done, but since it looks like they both attach to the lower front fork the same way, something might be possible.

I put a Lightning front fender on my Uly. I love the look of the bike with that set up. Before packing up the stock fender, I did check to see if the rear portion of the stock Uly fender would work in combo with the Lightning fender. The short anwer is no. There are a lot of interference points. My guess was by the time I finished modifying the Uly fender it would look terrible. Since I use my bike mostly as a sport tourer, I don't expect to kick up too much debris on the engine. I can always switch back to the stock Uly configuration if my riding style changes. The flexibility of this bike is amazing!

This piece is being moulded now. It will ONLY fit using the stock Ulysses side sections though. The whole 3 piece Uly front fender may fit the other XB models, although I would worry about clearance between the fender and engine/chin spoiler, particularly on the brakes.

hi Trojan, that looks great. Daywalker is obviously looking for the Ulysses 3-part lower fender system integrated somehow with a Lightning's lower front fender (not the Uly's upper 'beak').
Anyone know if the Ulysses 3-peice has been successfully modded to function on an XB? Regarding clearance issues, I recall Uly owners talking about the fender making contact with the chin spoiler in some cases due to relatively tight design clearances and maxing out front suspension compression.

Had a look at a Ulysses when I was at the dealers picking up my bike after having some work done and fitting the top beak looks like no problem as all the mounts are there.

I would then be happy if I could fit the ulysses bottom guard and just get rid of the standard lighting guard completely. Looking at the pictures above I can't see any clearance issues. Just need to find out the prices of the parts and if not too much give it a go.

Daywalker, interesting pic fiddling, just be aware those buell adobe pdf illustrations may not be exactly to scale. I'd be surprised if there are real world tire clearance problems from extreme suspension compression by mounting a Uly upper front fender BEAK on a Lightning - even if it did rub, at least the tire is rolling in the right direction as not to get hung up it.

On another subject (sorry) - fitting a Uly 3-section lower fender to keep debris off the engine front on a Lightning. As Trojan noted, is there a clearance issue with the Lighting chin fairing spoiler and the Ulysses 3-section center peice.. Looks like the Uly center section is safely located in that upper pocket of space between the engine and tire to me. I hope Trojan-Horse and/or American Sport Bike can check this out for us one day.

Rambling on, Uly's got more trail/rake fork angle than a std Lightning which probably provides more distance from the chin; however, the higher ground clearance places the chin closer to the tire/fender. There was a Ulysses comment about the tire contacting the nose/chin fairing and a factory-fix on the way in mid December..

Someone went on to say that 'it will be a new fairing with a little different contour right at the front.' and a racing related recommendation 'that you should loosen the exhaust and try and move the muffler as far aft as possible since the fairing mounts to the muffler.'
On the other hand, a Ulysses poll, 22 people responded the there was not a tire rubbing prob.

Anyway, I remember seeing a pic of the tire contact rub mark on the chin fairing on a Uly, didn't look like a big deal.
