Hi, I have another thread here about my XB12R whistling at around 3,000 RPM, and I have come to the conclusion that the primary chain might be loose. Does someone have a diagram as to go about adjusting it? My owners manual isnt to clear on what to d. My bike is scheduled for the 5,00 mile service this Friday but I want to look it over on my own so I know what it looks like before the mechs touch it.

If you look at the left side of your bike.. there are two covers that can be removed... The big one w/ three screws is the Clutch cover, the little just to the left and up a bit is the primary chain inspection cover, open that and check the play in your chain. Then look at your owners manual to see what the play should be.. i know by feel how much my x-1 should have, but not sure for the xb's. check the knowledge vault for the proper tension that should be on the chain.
The tubers had a adjustment on the bottom of the engine just above the muffler, I am not sure if the XB's are like that also.. again KV...

Get the service manual. it goes over this in detail, as well as 10,000 other things. Best money you'll spend on your bike! Daves can get you one for like $50.

vaneo1, I was informed a while back that a whistle is the result of the primary being too TIGHT. Mine was making a whistling sound after the shop replaced my stator, among other things they reinstalled wrong. I loosened it a bit and the whistle went away.

I just checked the primary and it appears way to tight. It has free play when I push down on it but when I push up it wont budge. Whereis the adjuster for the primary? My owners manual doesnt say anything about adjustment

It looks like a threaded bolt coming out from under the case on the same side. loosen the locking nut and use an allen wrench to tighten or loosen. I think it should be 3/4" cold play? Check that though I dont have the manual in front of me. Better loose than tight seems like. Then retighten locking nut. Make sure to check the chain in different positions. Check it in one spot roll the rear a bit and check again. Do that a couple of times and take the average.

On an XB, the play should be equal to about the thickness of the chain itself, in either direction (up/down) when cold. This amount of play allows for stretching of the trans at operating temp.

It wasn't until I started adjusting the primary myself *exactly* by the book that I realised how much it affects the rest of the bike. Weird vibes, oddball noises, drivetrain snatch and dodgy shifting all stem from having the just a little out of adjustment.

In the absence of a drivechain to clean/lube/adjust I spend some quality time with the primary. Sad I know.

I was experiencing some overall sloppyness in my riding that I was blaming on myself for a while. Then, because of some knockery noises in the tranny I figured I should get the primary checked/adjusted - I'm around that 5,000 mile mark... WHAT A DIFFERENCE! The bike feels all brand new again. That feeling of the throttle being fused drectly to the rear wheel is back in that way you never know you missed it until it happens. A loose primary chain will manifest itself all thru the drivetrain.

If you say that a whining noise is an indication of the primary being to tight, I'll just have to take your word for it - never been there myself.

However, at the opposite side the fence - a loose primary chain will sound just like someone snuck a wooden marble into your tranny when you weren't looking.
