I think it's interesting, the mentality of people who smoke cigarettes. They don't want the butts to stink up their car, even though they are already smoking in there. So of course, they throw them out the window on the freeway.

We all see them skipping around the blacktop, especially at night. Careless motorists have no idea what kind of mayhem they can cause with such thoughtless actions. Last night I caught one in the neck, and it stuck there, between my jacket and scarf. Burning... burning... Now I have a giant purple blister on my neck right above my collarbone.

So that's the second time in less than a week that something has tried to get me. I think I'm gonna put the bike on the stand for a couple of weeks and put those new springs in that I've been wanting.

PS: I know a lot of you smoke, and I have no doubt in my mind that people here do NOT throw lit cigarettes out on the freeway. I was just sitting here with this throbbing lump on my neck reading the posts and I couldn't keep quiet about it. I know that you know that I know that you know that I don't think any of you are guilty of being so inconsiderate.

Yes the jacket is fine, but my nice homemade scarf is burned through in about a 2 inch circle.

Matt,
California used to have a unique law against throwing a burning object out the window of a vehicle. If you could have got their license number and kept the cigarette butt you could have made a very nice case against them if you'd have wanted to pursue it.

I've had the stinking things land in my lap on the bike before from jerks flipping them out the window. Only once have I been able to catch up while still in possession of their butt and flip it back at their now closed window. Funny how fast a car can slow down on the freeway.

Yes, in California (unless it has changed) it is a $500 fine for throwing any object, and $1000 fine for any burning object.

In my younger years (1976 Honda CB750F) I used to carry a pocket full of pennies. Pennies which I would "donate" to the offending car by way of scattering them across the hood and windshield. I would never do anything so irresponsible now and regret ever having done so. But that doesnt change the fact that it was funny as hell at the time and I felt vindicated.

Don't worry, in the near future all smokers will be banned from living in the US.

I don't flip them out the window if people are behind me.

I helped put out a roadside brush fire this summer caused by a cigarette, found the cigarette butt that started it and pointed it out to the officer who responded. Pretty sure nobody was behind the driver when he flipped it out the window.
Please use your ashtray, thanks.

I'll never understand the mentality of people who smoke, period. And it has nothing to do with whether they throw their butts out the window or not.

I don't understand why cigy butts are any different from banana peels, chewing gum wrappers, or an unwanted loveseat. To everyone who hurls butts out the window or otherwise disposes of them freely (my mom throws 'em right outside her driveway!!!!) - I'd love to empty my trash on your living room floor.

Do you understand the mentality of people who drink?

Live and let live, just don't hurl on me.

If the butt started the fire wouldn't it have burned up in the fire?

3 packs a day for 25 years -- 'til last August. Why smoke? Well, it's just damn enjoyable.

When I got very ill in August -- so ill that I didn't even want a cigarette -- I decided that it was probably my last chance to try and quit -- and not die of emphysema or lung cancer. When I hit almost two months, I bought the Buell FIrebolt as my reward.

If I start again, I gotta sell it. Period.

Smokers are addicts -- period. Some are rude -- some are not.

If I was certain that I wouldn't get lung cancer or emphysema, I'd fire one up right now. Addiction...

Nope, the butt was at the upwind end of it. You/we could clearly see how and where the fire started. A very nice charred funnel leading right to the burnt end of the butt. The cigarette butt rolled off the pavement and about 6" into the brush on the shoulder of the road, came to rest in the dry brush and weeds, and things escalated from there. There are hundreds of roadside brush fires started every year this way.

Guzzimon,
If you really want to make an issue out of it I can get you a copy of the police report if you come to the Buell Homecoming in June. Or if you want a second opinion on the subject of roadside fires just ask Firemanjim on the site here for his take on the subject. No bull about it.

I've seen a fire started with a match that did exactly the same thing. The fire started very small, and was blown a particular direction. A fairly big brush fire resulted.

A half-burned match with a ever-widening strip of burned weeds heading away from it told the tale.

As for smoking, I HATE it when people throw them out the window. Use the ashtray!
I watched my grandpa wither away from lung cancer - slow and painful, and not a pretty site for the last couple months. Not a temptation for me.

It's a worldwide problem with a very simple solution: responsibility of the smokers to be responsible for where they put their butts.

Mike --

Not trying to make an issue -- just sounds a bit more like theory than fact to me. As Dave said, smokers will probably be banished from this country soon. As one who can empathize with their plot, I just get sick of people "picking" on them and making smokers the culprit for everything from global warming to the Bird Flu.

Won't be in Wisconsin for Homecoming. However, if it's not TOO much trouble, I'd love to gaze upon a copy of that police report.

I personally don't care if people choose to smoke or not. I have had people in my family die from Lung cancer Both associated w/ and not w/ cigerettes. But i say it is kind of NOT JUST LIKE just kind of like firearms (which i am very much for) saftey. If you decide to smoke be responsible. Put your Butts in a safe place i.e. ashtray.

Like i said i don't care if you smoke.. you are adults your decision. But be responsible for your actions.... that is it i am done...

Now I'M going to have a smoke.

BTW.. I just bring an empty coke can in the car with me, and put the butts in there. When I get to my destination, I toss the whole thing in the trash.
It keeps the car from actually smelling like an ashtray, although you can still tell that I smoke in it.

Ok.. off to smoke!
