sorry if I post a new thread but I can't find this info in the archive.. (I think that the "search" function is a bit complicated  ) I have the picture of the muffler showing the external position of the actuator buy I don't know how to upload it. if the muffler is removed does the actuator go to the "open" or "closed" position? I want to fix it in the "open" setup, for maximum airflow. thanks p.s. I'll post my impressions (xb12 exhaust on a xb9) when I get the muffler (just a few days) | ||

Xxx, Hook a piece of wire on the valve where the lead ball from the cable goes and pull it open and tie around the cable boss beside of it....what your doing is very creative and thoughtful but if it worked like that I'm sure the valve would have been open on the 12 for maximum airflow....all the valve does in the design is to interupt the scavenging effect so that it doesn't pull a vacuum on the new charge all the time to make the design more efficient.... If it was me doing it I would mess with opening a certain percent of the way at a time so you don't miss anything along the way..... Kevin www.kdfab.com | ||

actually I'm trying to figure out how to create a manual actuator, using that thing from a mountain bike that is used to change the gears. (sorry for my poor english). I would use it with my left thumb.... let's see what I end up to. thanks 4 the advices | ||

I saw on Hillbilly-Motors-motors that they have an inline plug and a switch for the actuator so you can switch it open when ever you want | ||

Xxxb9s, as Tq_freak pointed out, Hillbilly-Motors do show an electric on/off switch in their on-line store. (Doesn't appear on their general site though?) It looks like it will either full open, or full close the exhaust valve. I remind you I own a xb9 and planning to install just the xb12 exhaust... I'm getting the muffler, without cables and wires... so I don't think I can use the electric actuator. I'll use my left thumb's muscles  (Message edited by xxxb9s on November 30, 2005) | ||

just got the xb12 muffler. I've mounted it in 1/2 hour since I've done it 3 times and now I know how to do it. today it's raining so I went out just to "hear how it sounded". I couldn't ride much so I couldn't drive at 4000 as much as the race ECM would need to learn the new airflow setup. Anyway, this is my firs and incomplete report: the sound is increased compared to xb9 muffler. It is very weird to me but it sounds louder at idle!! after 2000rpm it sounds very similar to xb9, above 5000 it is louder. the power delivery (with the "unlearned" race ECM) is pretty much like the graphic posted here http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/32777/159899.html?1133457532: stronger below 3000rmp, then a big hole, and stronger above 5000rpm. I'm waiting for a nice sunny day to make a long run trying to make the ECM figuring out what's going on. I guess if a TFI would help to fix that big hole too. Anyway if I can't get the power increase I'm looking for I'll just cut that ziptie that is holding the valve open. Then I'd get the "green" curve of the graphic (or slightly better due to my FAST system). p.s. I didn't have time to make a "choke-like" lever actuator. The hole didn't go away after 50+ miles on highway and 20miles in traffic. I guess it can't be fixed by the ECM. I've set the valve on "closed" and it runs perfect. The sound is different from valve open, it's a lot quieter but still different from xb9's. I notice a prompt throttle response, I feel it smoother and I think I gained a little bit of power. at least my butt's dyno says that. I'm happy with it and I'll leave this setup on. So if you are planning to buy a stock muffler, buy the 12's. c u |
