Hi,
I want to remove the transmission sprocket on my 2003 XB9S and for this I have to remove the left-hand threads transmission sprocket nut.
What is the size of the socket for this nut , is it a metric one ?

Thanks for your help

You need a special tool to hold the sprocket and another special tool for the sprocket nut. They both have HD part numbers that I don't have available to me right now. I know this because my nut lock plate broke and the nut spun loose, causing the sprocket to lose all of its internal splines, significantly reducing my ability to achieve forward motion.

I just removed the locking plate and used a air impact wrench and socket. It came right off. I think I kept it in gear and applied the rear brake while I did it seated on the bike. I think the socket was an 1 & 1/8". Remember, it's reverse threaded.

The nut is 1 1/8 inch reverse thread. Also remember that once the sprocket/pulley is off that the out put shaft can move in and out make sure it is pulled out when you put the new sprocket/pulley on. If its a tight fit, preheat your oven to @300-350 degrees and place the new sprocket/pulley in for @15minutes until golden brown... Wear gloves and then place on shaft. Do not force the sprocket/pulley on you will do tranny damage.

The socket size is 1-7/8". I bought a six point socket that size at an auto/truck parts store that leans heavily towards the truck side.

That was a 3/4" drive socket, you can get a 3/4" to 1/2" drive adapter but using a 3/4" drive breaker bar would be a better choice.

I have not used my socket yet, looking at the service manual is says to put the transmission in low gear and take the nut off. I'm thinking you'd have to use a locking bar on the primary side or do something else to lock the sprocket. Anyone know how to do that?

I'm wondering if a section of an old drive belt could handle the forces if it was C-clamped together or something?

I'm replacing my belt with a chain, so I'm currently going through this procedure. 2 questions:

1. The manual says nothing about the holding tool when removing the sprocket. Is it necessary?

2. The manual says to use the holding tool when installing the sprocket. Will the holding tool work with my new chain sprocket, or does it only work with the belt drive sprocket?

thanks!
