Here is my problem. Let me know if I am SOL.

I started off with just the D&D exhaust. Everything ran fine. I was waiting for the K&N's to come off of backorder before I would install the race ECM I had purchased with the exhaust.

After installing the filter, race ECM and having the TPS reset, I noticed that I had hard starting issues. It would start fine after it was warmed up for a couple of minutes. When you first would start it, it would puke and die. This could happen as much as 3-5 times in the summer and 10 plus times just last week in October.

I know that my bike is said to be cold blooded, but this is rediculous. I will try and change the plugs next spring to see if that might help.

Anyone else have these same issues. Could it just be a combination of all three components?

Please help me out.

Later

I have the same set up. Do you have the idle set correct??

I've seen a number of XBs do that after installing the race ECM, including mine.

I used to think it was caused by the race ECM, but I've seen mine do it from time to time on the stock ECM. So far I've yet to find a cause for it. Anonymous has remained mighty quiet on the issue.

To rule out the race ECM, try swapping your original stock ECM in and see if the problem persists. You will NOT require a TPS reset when putting in your original ECM since it's going back on the same bike. The ECM retains it's TPS settings.

For what it's worth, I run a D&D with a stock ECM and K&N and it runs fine. Starts up immediately without fail, hot or cold.

Maybe a bad TPS reset when you had your race ECM put in?

I dont have a 12 or any of any of the goodies, however just thinking I could say by using a race ecm and changing the fuel/air mix you could be running really rich and fouling your plugs. After you change or atleast look at the plugs you should be able to decide if this is a simple problem as it sounds.

I also have the same setup. It starts fine every time. It is cold here now 30-60 degrees and I rode it last night before the snow hits tonight. Any sponsors make a front ski for a xb?

I also have had the TPS set two times already.

Hey Cazy dont feel bad I have a 9s and it does the same thing I cant figure it out. Sometimes it does it sometimes it dont? If it does, when I start it will go to regular idle for a few seconds and then sputter for a bit then quit. Its got me stumped too! I have a jardine, race ecm and k&n, and my idle IS right on mine to.

When you had the TPS reset, did the tech set it at zero? On the Digital Tech, the TPS must be zeroed and then set between 5.2-5.6

If the tech at your local dealer isn't a certified Buell tech, he might not know this.

Just a guess...

The tech that has worked on Crazy's bike does know how to reset the TPS and idle.
I'm not sure what's going on with it.
My 12R with a race kit does the same thing from time to time.
To me it's no big deal.
To Crazy it is.

Crazy I will be in the office on Friday.
Call me and we'll see what we can do.
Maybe we can try a different ECM?
Or I can get some "special" help for your bike.

Did it stop blowing fuses?

The Ign fuse.
We ended up replacing the ign switch.
Fixed it while it was at the dealership but we've all been there.
You know, electrical stuff that only happens when the bike isn't at the shop!
Just want to hear from Crazy that it's ok now.

My 12R w/ D&D, race ecm, cut airbox did the same thing cold, also had the tps reset 3 times, still
it would stall . Finally went back to the stock ecm and added a TFI...problem solved. I think this same situation was brought up about a year ago, and was decided that on some 12's , for what ever reason, ( ecm related) the race unit didn't work well

Take a look around the ecm, fuse box, battery, ect, for a loose or bare ground wire.

My 9 started having those symptoms when the battery was low. A voltmeter should read 12.8 as fully charged. Mine had those symptoms with the battery at 12.6. That's technically 75% charged.

Ah ha! So I am not alone with this symptom...

XB12cg, '05, 5K miles. Recently installed air filter and race ECM. Drummer was already in place, and bike has no other issues. Dealer installed ECM and did the TPS reset. Bike ran well for a week or two, then began to stall after cold starts. As CMM213 said, it starts right up, idles fine for a few seconds, then the idle drifts down below 800 and she dies. A light hand on the throttle to keep her going through the "slow" period prevents the stall.

I remember how she behaved with the standard ECM on cold starts... would idle nicely for three minutes or so, then I could hear the idle drop off ever so slightly, just a small step change. But no stalling, because after the 3 minutes she was warm enough to keep going on her own.

It sounds to me like a slight programming issue... the race ECM is simply rolling back the idle speed like it should, but its doing it too soon, before the warm-up is complete. I doubt there is anything I could do about it... that program is burned into EEPROM in its little brain.

Well its a minor annoyance, but I can live with it. Otherwise, the bike runs very well indeed--it's faster than stink and sounds like Link Wray's Telecaster set on 11. The filter/Drummer/ECM combo really sharpened this cat's claws... heh heh!

I took it for a ride tonight and it just seems to me like it is getting worse.

I hope I do not have to put all the stock parts back on to make it run properly.

I have had the same problem with mine. Somedays it starts great, idles perfect, some days it starts and dies. I used to think that if I took it out for a longer ride it was happier the next morning and would start and run perfect, but that is not always the case.

I suspect the race ECM....has anyone heard of a recall, T.S.B., or any legitimate finger pointing to the ECM?

I know ya'll are talking about an XB12, but, Black_sunshine was having similar symptoms, the shop couldn't find the problem either. After four hours of hardcore looking (dealership couldn't replicate problem) a loose ground to the ECM was found, It's all good now. I'm not saying ya'll have a loose ground, only that it sounds like an ECM issue.
Hope ya'll get it sorted out real soon.

Tommy,
I had a similar problem with my bike. It would always die after start up. Dealer checked it out and found that the timing was a little off. Re-adjusted it and things were fine again. You might check that...

Thanks, Drake, I'll check it. And maybe bump up the idle a bit too.

My previous comment about the ECM programming was pure speculation-- I have no personal knowledge of the way the ECM turns input data into command outputs. I am mighty curious, however!

Watch that throttle!
They are very sensitive to adjustment.
If you go over a 1050rpm idle, the throttle will hang at or around 2000rpm for too long when you let off the gas.

take the bike on a 100+mph blast somewhere and really get the rpms up. My xb9 does the same thing mostly when its cooler outside.....no problems all summer but now its hard to start...its definetly the cold weather. Tps reset will not fix it...plus might make it better for a little while....do you do a lot of stop and go driving?? I found the bike runs better if you get it on the highway and open the throttle up

Hey kowpow did the problem clear up when you put a new battery in.

I didn't put a new battery in but put a trickle charger on it. So far it hasn't even acted like it wanted to die. Hopefully that
cured it.

Before jumping to conclusions, you may want to wait for Dave's Mechanic to rule out all possibilities, I don't know how alot of the Techs out there are, but I know that the ones that Dave has are VERY good, or they wouldn't be there.

Looks like we cured Crazy's bike.
Ernie reset the TPS(was off 1 degree),changed the plugs-front one was black, rear one was brown but headed towards black, reset the timing, reset the idle, lubed the idle cable(it was real sticky).
We left it outside in the cold all day.
I went out about an hour ago and it fired right up,idles without stalling like it did in his garage Weds night when I picked it up.
I let it cool down for an hour and just got in from starting it again. Seems to be fine.
I will be delivering it back to him on Weds night after work unless he can come up tomorrow and ride it home.

You guys are great! I picked up my 04 12R Monday. Battery was dead, when it was charged enough to start, it would not run without operator assistance. I rode it till it got warm, and pulled the front wheel a few times. eventually it would idle. When I got it home several hours later, I plugged it in to charge while I waited for help to unload it, since I had read that low battery could cause problems. With the battery charged it idled fine. It has more power and is more cold blooded than the demo 05 I rode. Both have the race kit but the "identical" bikes dont run the same.
just my $.02
