My bike seems to be leaning more then before.I think that bolt that pivots along with the side stand is about to break.How many you's has this happened to on the 12's and did ya catch it before it broke?? | ||

Dana, fix it now!!! Mine did the same thing. If you replace with stock parts it will just happen again. I used 2 grade 8 bolts, welded one on top of the other and cut the top one short to make it fit under the primary cover. It's been a month plus and no problems. I'm gonna take it off and finish it up nice and neat and paint or powder it now that I know it's going to work out good. It was no fun to walk into the garage and see the bike leaning against the wall!!! Odie | ||

Dana, fyi, Pwnzor added these comments to Odie's recommended fix back in September: here is the official diagnosis (in my opinion): Running the bike while it is on the side stand causes the bolt to slowly back out of the hole, causing the bolt to shear off at the shoulder. Mine fell over while I was warming it up and my stand was also bent when this happened. When I retrieved the broken piece from the hole I could see absolutely no evidence of any thread locking material. My solution: I ordered 2 bolts, one to install and the other I carry on the bike at all times. I installed the new bolt using a generous portion of RED threadlocker. This was after I spent about 45 minutes pounding the actual stand back into shape. It's been over a year now, and I check the bolt regularly. No sign of it backing out, its right where I put it. Something else you might want to consider: Repeat the threadlock procedure for your shift linkage. Get some spare shifter linkage bolts and carry those also. | ||

John I don't see any signs of them backing out. They are very tight actually. | ||

Mine wasn't backing out either. It was just plum wore thru the bolt and broke. That's why I say if you replace with stock parts it will happen again. Luckily the wall caught it with no damage at all. Very lucky. | ||

Johnb- #11 and #19 but they are one bolt/piece on an '04 12S/R. | ||

rageonthedl, dana's got a '04 xb12s, i think the kickstand recall/bulletin was only for a short production run of '03 bikes - good stands are supposed to have an 'R' stamped on the baseplate somewhere - heard of these breaking too. in any case, odie's got the right idea; but, welding's not an option for many. either something's loose, worn, or breaking on dana's bike.. wonder what it is and what an 'easy' permanent fix is. haven't heard about '05/'06 xb's or uly stands failing - was there a design change? yeah i know that he has an 04 but their are more than just that one recall (did not remember what years they were for off the top of my head)..... Rage could you check for sure?? The only recall I got by mail anyways was the horn wire recall that I discovered and fixed at 200 miles or so. Wonder why they haven't informed me or others about this possible failure?? Maybe its a bulletin hey what a way to find out though. | ||

Dana, the recall for the sidestand was only for certain XB's due to the bolt being the wrong size which could have caused it not to kick back up if your rode off without kicking it up yourself. | ||

I've got an '04 12R and the recall is not for these bikes. Mine broke while on a road trip in Arkansas this summer. We stopped to buy gas, I put the kickstand out and it just came apart! Fortunately for me I caught it, no damage. I picked up all the pieces, (notice the post above) got back to the hotel and with some helpful locals aquired a standard bolt, nut and some locktight which worked great until I got home a 1000 miles later. I replaced it with the factory piece which lasted 15,000 miles originally. So just like most Buellers, this is a bolt I check from time to time. |
