Hi,
I've been wanting a xb12s ever since they came out. Finally found a deal in Sacramento(black 2004). Flew from Sandiego to check it out. It was a Salvaged title but looked good with only some scratches and repairs from being dropped. Well I buy it and start the long ~600 mile ride home. Halfway near bakersfield the tranny goes out. Long story short I get a uhaul and get it to SD Harley. They tell me it had no tranny fluid. The guy that owned it before must have drained it and not replaced it. But it was still under warranty. And HD said they would replace the whole thing. Then today HD called me and told me that since the bike was totaled out that the warranty is void. Also now my bike is in pieces since they took it apart.

Just wondering if anyone knows where I could find a good tranny. How different is this tranny from the sportster? Anyone got a good HD discount.

Any help or insight would be much appreciated.

I was able to call the guy that sold it to me but he was strapped for the money and was only able to give me $700 for his mistake. not nearly enough for a new tranny.

Sounds like you need to take the guy that sold it to you to court. He should fix the tranny or give you the money for the bike back. It doesn't matter that he is strapped for cash, you bought a bike under the assumption that it was in running condition when in fact it was not.

It gets worse. HD won't guaranty any work they do cause the guy that had it did some crappy welding on the engine cases. So they tell me that it would be over $5000 to get it out of there shop fixed. Gonna cry in a corner for a while then figure out if I should fix it myself or part it out.

That sucks. Check E bay or a bike salvage yard for an engine. You may be able to pick one up for a lot less than 5000. If mot part it out you might be able to make a few bucks for a down payment on a new one or a nicer used one.

Is the tranny on the 9 the same as the 12. could I buy a 9 engine and move my crank and cylinders over?

Think you may have to have the cases bored to accept the cylinders. I could be wrong i think the cranks are the same stroke.

Find a trashed sporty (new) or XB (9 or 12) with a good engine.

Kudos for the guy for giving you $700.

Is S&S or other makers making new sportster crate motors? It will still be pricey, but you could come out with a really exceptional motorcycle.

9's and 12's have the same bore dia., the 12 has a longer stroke.
The tranny are the same (except '06), the primary drive ratio's are different. The 12 clutch has a stronger spring in it.

Check Ebay there have been some vert cheap Xb drivetrains for sale.

You could probably put that non-welded motor and trans in and just keep the old one for extra parts or part it out to get back some of your money.

What happens if I was to put in a new engine and trans? I know there is an engine number. Do I have to get it inspected or something so the registration matches the bike?

Don't know the state laws, but if you keep all the paper work you should be Ok.

Knew the 12 and the 9 shared something bore or stroke, got em backwards. Thanks xb9.

Whoa! First thing is to determine what exactly is damaged. Might not be so bad! You don't know until you open her up. That is the sucky part, having to crack the cases. Good time to have some other work done then too, if you know what I mean. More power baybee. : D

Seriously though, diagnose first, then mull over the alternatives.
