Check out the other wheely post in the XB forum. Yes you can wheely an XB. My friend has a 9S and I have a 12R and we can both rock 3rd gear no problem. There has been quite a bit of talk refering to the XB's inability to wheely lately, so I'm trying to get a cameraman or woman out to take some footage tonight or this weekend. I'll make a post about it.

My 03XB9S with drummer, race ecm, and cut 12 air box will wheelie with ease at any rpm above 3500 in first no clutch just grabbing afist of throttle.2nd gear comes up good at fast higher rpm shift.

wack the throttle close the throttle wack it again and your up.
or clutch it in first or second
http://www.uponone.com/videos.php?id=1667

check my profile for an example of the first method, only problem doing it that way(other than drivetrain abuse) is you dont get left with as much rpms so you cant ride them as long.
If you clutch it up going say 5mph u can throttle control them for blocks.

Xb9er, before you did your mods, would it pull up without clutching it... like enough to ride a nice wheelie at bp

I really dont know I did the right after 500 mile brake in and I had been off bikes for about 15 years. So I took it easy for a while just getting the feel and comfort back.

"dont get left with as much rpms so you cant ride them as long"

Not true, its all about balance point no matter how you initiate the wheelie.

No clutch standing:

I don't fan the clutch, but just accel away from a stop or near stop, get the engine around peak torque in first and do a quick shift into second with a clutch pop (not fanning it). It usually pops right up unless it's really hot outside. If you keep the throttle on more or less steady with small changes and you can get some pretty long wheelies (50 yards or more). Just be careful, sometimes the bike is running better and I end up vertical-if that happens just back off the gas, but not too much or it will drop like a rock...

wheelie everywhere! went riding last night and my buddy says my front end is off the ground more than it is on. not a expert, rarely get to the balancing point (working my way up). start out small and work your way up. BTW power wheelies occur! I dont care what mr. trump says.

Staggered.
As in, right foot on rider peg (covering rear brake), and left foot on passenger peg.

I've been practicing and can ride a wheelie in 2nd up to about 70mph on my 03' XB9R. I really don't like doing wheelies in first because by the time I get up and comfortable I'm redlining. To wheelie in second I’ll go around 40-45mph, hold the clutch and rev up a few thousand rpm, and then dump the clutch. I have a friend that has been riding Honda CBR’s a couple of years longer than I’ve been riding and he still is scared to get it up. You do have to have balls to wheelie. It’s either all or nothing. I practiced over a year on smaller bikes before I got my XB9R. I had bought a 1990 Honda NS50, 5 or 6 speed manual with 17 inch wheels, for a few hundred bucks to play with one summer. Everyday I would practice in my yard, on the sidewalk, and in the street. Since it was so light if it started to go all the way over I was able to jump off and bring it down or just dump it without going over with it. The thing I learned is that you have to commit to the wheelie and follow it through or it won’t work. If you second guess yourself and hesitate it can cause problems. I also have a 05 Genuine Scooters Stella 150, manual 4 speeds, and every time I ride I try to wheelie at just about every stop sign, just blew the front shock the other day. Playing on the smaller bikes I feel helped me with my confidence and balance. If you’re going to wheelie you have to be willing to live with the fact you might trash the bike. If you start worrying about crashing it will just make it harder. Just my opinion and experience. Does anyone know it is possible to shift during a wheelie? Can’t really bring the bike up in 3rd and would like to go faster than 70mph.

Speed is not your friend. (except for the centrifigual force of the wheels...yeah...yeah). But the conscequences are worse.

Learn to get to bp (balance point) and you wont need to go fast, you will be able to ride the wheelie as long as you want without needing more rpm.

I dont see why you would want to be on one wheel doing 70+

Yes it is possible to shift with it in the air, this I would not recommend, especially if you dont have a good feel for bp on the bike. If you shift and dont have just the right rpm the bike is going to go instantly faster ---- good way to loop it.

Also if you are doing fast wheelies you are probably on the street, which is not the best place for it. Work in a parking lot or dead end road, much less to worry about there, and safer.

I agree 99buellx1 that speed isn't the friend. I just find it easier to find the BP in a second gear wheelie than in first. I just found the BP recently and it has made a big difference and I need to work on finding it easier in first. Wheelies at 70+, no real reason just fun and a big rush, not enough common sense and fear. Just wanted to know if anyone has shifted during a wheelie because I'm too scared it may flip. I've almost gone over a few times trying to wheelie in first, still trying to get use to the torque.

When I wasn't able to do 2nd gear wheelies I used to shift from 1st to 2nd, but the problem with that is you have to take the bike past the balance point to shift or the front will just come down. If you get to the BP you will not be increasing in speed or rpms, so you won't need to shift. If you want to do faster wheelies stand on the back left peg and cover the brake with your right foot. Go about 40-50 and clutch the bike up while compressing the springs (Try starting 2nd gear at 30, which will give you more rpms to play with.). This will pick up the bike in 3rd like it is nobodies business. My friend can has no problems on his 9S doing so and neither do I on my 12R. We can also both get our bikes up in 4th with both feet on the back pegs, but this is not a very good way to do a wheely because you have no way to bring the front end down fast if needed. Just practice getting to the BP and it will all come to you.

I was on my way to Ventura HD/Buell in Camarillo a few weeks ago and saw a guy on a black XB12R riding a wheelie up the road. I followed him a ways and he was riding the wheelie up the street totally in control and not speeding. I followed him and eventually go to talk with him as I'm thinking of getting an XB12R. He said he does stunt work in movies and t.v., and got the Buell to practice on. He said he clutches it up. He doesn't go on the 'net though. Oh yeah, he was about 55 + y/o. very cool
