What SHOULD a new 2003 XB9R cost? How about a nearly new (400 miles) 2003 XB9R in PERFECT shape.

I'm a long-time Guzzi guy, but when I rode an XB12R a few months ago I became HOOKED! The most fun I've ever had on two wheels.

I'm in the market -- talking to one guy -- but I do not want to be "taken." I'll happily pay a premium price for a perfect, low-mileage XB9R, but somehow $6200 seems like a bit much after reading this board.

Thoughts?

I wouldn't sell my 03 XB9R that cheap, but we have a bit of a different market here.

Recently i`ve seen a 2003 XB9 with 4000 miles for $4100 and a XB12 with 5000 miles for $6100.

Personally i wouldn`t pay more than $5000 tops for an 2003 reguardless of how few miles. I`ve seen a few nice ones for $4500 with less than 5000 miles all being sold privately.

Look around in the classified adds, Ebay, or Cycle Trader for the best deals. On the high end usually the dealers will charge much more, not all, some. My local dealer was selling an 2003 demo for like $9000 or something, crazy!

Doesn't seem that bad of a price.

However I would check for a private party sale. You may be able to get a bike with more "goodies" for the same price or less. Also more room to haggle with a private party.

I do not think that "asking" price is way out of line. But i agree it could be better

Perhaps, a few negotiations points...

Winter is rolling around, harder to sell used bikes at prime price. That will have to wait for spring, increase in demand and tax return time, and his bike will be another year older, so if he is anxious to sell he may be receptive

Today a new one comes with 2 years warranty. His originally came with a one year. Does his have a warranty / extended warranty that can be passed on?

Newer ones (2004+) come with better belts, better belt guards, upgraded primary shoe, larger front forks. Nothing that would stop me from buying a used 03 (and i did this past Feb), but still some haggling points

I found one that was a stock engine, no common modifications (e.g. - aftermarket exhaust, de-snorkled, drilled air box, etc..,) I prefer no engine modification when i buy a used bike. Sometimes when people do these things and don't do it right it can bring some problems.

Make sure you prefer the XB9R over the XB12R. Personally I do. I think the XB9R works better around town, yet still has the same cornering abilities (which is part of the reason I got the bike). I also have a Yamaha R1 so my XB9R is not about top speed for me...just love that twin low end torque and some good twisties.

Finally - peace of mind regarding who owned it and how it was cared for is worth extra for me.
Which does raise a question, why only 400 miles. Was it purchased new in 03 and sat for 2 1/2 years? Or was it purchased new more recently?

Just my opinions for whatever it is worth

Good luck

Thanks for all of the feedback. I'm gonna give this some thought and act accordingly.

BTW, the bike was bought new a year ago by a Harley guy who though it would be neat to own a sportbike.

Thanks,

The latest price from the seller is 6 even...

Tempted, as the Guzzi is pretty much done (note the Buell-inspired under-motor exhaust) and I need a winter project.

The bike is stone stock -- a perfect canvas.

The Goose, for those who might care...

If you can afford it pick up the Buell, it's a different ride than the Italian bike and a great garage mate. Mine takes the bulk of the wear and tear off of my Laverda.

You won't regret it.

I bought my '03 9R Dec. of last year. Same situation. Harley fan with sport bike curiosity. 2K miles on the clock and the K&N equipped race kit installed. Paid $6500 and that included delivery from Nor-Cal to So-Cal. That was a sweet deal for a bike originally bought and then resold in Cali.

Paid $6250.00 for my 03' XB9R a few months ago. I bought it from the general manager (his personal bike) of the local HD shop. It came with 1 1/2 year warranty and the piece of mind that it was well serviced.
If confronted with a choice, pay a little more for a bike you know has been taken care of instead of trying to save a few hundred bucks.
Good luck on your purchase.

Again for an 2003, $5000 tops, its already 3 model years old.

I`ve seen about 4 2003`s for sale under $5000. Currently in the BADWEB classifieds there is a 2004 XB12 for $6200 or B/O with some extra`s.

WInter is coming and people that usually causes bike prices to drop alittle too. Plus resale value for Buells doesn`t seem to be too good. Why, i wish i knew?

If you don`t believe me look around for yourself.

Also from the BADWEB Classifieds

2003 XB9 for $4900
2005 City X for $4800

And in the paper locally 2004 XB9 for $4000 or B/0 with 2500 miles and D&D exhuast.

As long as we're discussing the BadWeb classifieds, I have a 2005 XB12R with 5 miles and 2005 XB12Scg with 4 miles there for $8500 each. Both carry a full 2-year factory warranty.

I couldn't agree more. Especially if you are not too mechanically inclined. (doesn't apply here) I have been fortunate with my bike. Problems have been few (two) and easy to fix. (under $100)

Got my stock 2004 XB12S w/ 4600 miles for $5700. I did have to change the rear tire, and get a minor oil leak fixed (under warranty). Other than that, and a few minor scrapes / mark, the bike is in excellent condition.

So for an 03 XB9S in absolute perfect condition, I'd value it at around $5000 - $5500 or so. But then realize that 03 is definitely out of warranty, and any fix you need is out of your pocket and HD dealers charges an arm an a leg for any little thing. Some minor defects may not be obvious either, I didn't find the oil leak on mine until about 100 miles into owning it.

One more thought, check www.kbb.com for retail / trade in values. Give you good idea. But yeah, Buell have horrible resale value. Try asking ur dealer about trading yours in, you'll be amazed how low the dealer will give you for a perfect / new Buell you just bought from him not a year ago. : )

That's why I can't make myself spend $10k on a brand new Buell knowing that in 2 years, it's trade in is pretty much half what I'd pay brand-new.

I bought my 2003 XB9r (4000 miles) WITH race kit and a few aftermarket things installed for $5400 a year ago from an Aprilia dealer. GREAT DEAL IMO. The aprilia people didn't know it had the race kit installed. I think mine may have been an exception, though.
