Hello everyone. If I switch from my race ecm back to stock ecm, will I have to have the tps reset again? Thanks!

Yup. Anytime you unplug the ECM you need a tps reset.

Sorry, not true. Otherwise you'd need a tps reset if you changed the battery.

Kyb, if your stock ecm was last used on your bike then it can go straight back in without a tps reset.

When the tps is reset, the ecm stores the voltage coming from the tps (with the butterfly completely closed) for THAT PARTICULAR BIKE. It's just matching the ecm to a particular tps sensor. The ecm can be removed and put on a shelf and will remember that voltage value for about 10 years.

Excellent. I still have the stock one and I might change back to it. Thanks for the info.

So, if I read this correctly, you're saying (theoretically) we can swap back and fourth between the stock ECM and the Race ECM once they have both had a TPS reset for my bike? Without needing a TPS reset each time?
Groovy!

Just swapped back last night from my race ECM the original stock ECM that came new with my bike. I had the dealer install the race ECM as part of the purchase deal, so I had actually never even ridden my 9sx stock.

So for almost a year and 8000+ miles, the original ECM was off. Swapped them back last night, thumbed the starter this morning, and she ran like a clock.

Not at all.

I am going on a "adventure" ride this weekend, it will be lots of back roads, lots of twisties, some gravel, and even a little bit of dirt. I am looking forward to it.

The ride flyer had a blurb in it about "all quiet bikes welcome". It's a fair request, especially considering that this ride will go places that might include state forests and possibly private property.

So I talked to them, and they said thanks for respecting our request, cmon down anyway it should be fine. But it kept bugging me, and I already felt inconsiderate on my early morning or late evening commutes through residential zones, or running by churches / parks doing weddings, whatever. I was never quite comfortable with it.

Meanwhile, they were doing more construction in our new subdivision. They had this idiot earth grader that had two big diesel engines with little or no exhaust, and started running the things at 7 am until dark. Really loud, really annoying, even just trying to work in the garage or play with the kids.

I liked the sound and performance of the race ECM and special ops pipe combo, but it was LOUD. Not "ear bleeding D&D loud", but definately loud.

My fuel economy was also from 42 to 45 mpg no matter how hard I ride it. I like to ride the bike hard and hit the twisties, but the reality is that 80% of my 8k miles are simple commuting. It would be cool to be pulling more like 50 to 55 mpg.

The extra power was nice as well, but because it made so much noise, I was keeping the rev's lower. So the net effect was either a wash, or actually a loss of power. Peak and midrange hits were definately better with the race ECM and Odie pipe, but this bike for me is just not about peak power.

So I pulled it last night and swapped back to stock to see how I like it. I was apprehensive, but it felt like a comfortable old shoe when I took it out this morning. A much more enjoyable and relaxed ride with fewer worries and distractions. Between not being able to see the bike below me, and barely being able to hear the thing, it reinforces that whole illusion of just willing yourself to be flying through space along an open country road.

For me, the 9sx is all about enjoyable commuting, fun rides, and great handling, and it has ample power to do this in the stock configuration, the race setup was adding nothing but noise.

The one valid thing that I *will* miss is that the special ops pipe did scare the crap out of deer. They would be running the opposite direction while I was still hundreds of yards away from them.

Ops sorry for the bad info. The manual says to reset it if you unplug it, unless i misread it.

Ok sorry to hijack this thread a little...does this mean that I can try to diagnose what seems to be a faulty race ECM that I have had since new with the take off stock ecm the dealer gave me? What are the disadvantages of running the stock ECM with the race air filter & pipe?

Yes, you can. That is exactly what I did.

I think the service interval calls for a TPS reset at 1000 miles to account for any mechanical wear, but I don't think it typically changes. So it should run fine with the original ECM (which was calibrated for your throttle position sensor at the factory).

Stock ECM and a race kit will probably pick up a little power, and run a little lean, though probably not to the point of being dangerous to the engine.
