Under hard braking my bike seems like it floods out. I'm not sure the cause, but every time I need to stop in a hurry I have to pull over and restart my bike. Any thoughts? Example, this morning I dropped my lunch on the street so I pulled it down from about 45-50 about as quickly as I could and when I went to turn around the bike sounded funny so I let it die. I could hear it gasping for air under the airbox because I have the open airbox kit. The bike has done this the entire time I've had it, not just since I've done the open airbox conversion.

It sounds almost like it's running out of gas. How much did you have in the tank? Mine dies when stoppying, but I know what it is and I don't do stoppies that often, or very well, so it doesn't bother me. Did your lunch survive?

This used to happen to our race bike. If you have less than 1/2 tank of fuel it will all 'slosh' to the front of the frame under heavy braking, starving the pump of petrol. When you try to gas it again it just dies for a few seconds. You can try some Xpolosafe foam in the tank or just do what we did and make sure the tank is full all the time : (

I guess that makes sense. I think I had about a half tank of gas. Scares the crap out of me everytime it happens!

If you listen (read) to the Eric Buell chat on the XB12SX one thing that was pointed out is that in 05 they fixed the problem with the fuel pump starving for gas after heavy deceleration and the loud noise when the key is turned on. Air purging. Might ask a dealer what can be done to reposition the pump into an 05 position.

Yea, my 05 doesn't stall when the tank is low but it does seem like it doesn't run as well when the tank is low. The loud noise you refer to when starting is the fuel pump? I do hear that when first turning the key.

05-06 were supposed to have gotten an upgraded fuel pump because of this problem.

The '05 fuel pump is supposed to fix the fuel starvation under braking and the loud whine from the fuel pump. The only thing is that not all '05 models have the new pump. The new pump didn't come in until partway through the production run. I *think* they started using the new pump in September of '04. The build date is listed on the frame.

Olin, I was once coming up to a stop light going down hill and had to break hard. Once I got to the light my engine killed. I had about 120 miles on my tank which would make it low. Took a bit but it started right up after the pump got primed again.

The same thing kept happening to me on the track. Not good for the bike to nearly stall at 80mph in a turn with people close behind you. I guess I'll keep the tank full, but at the track that seems really dumb. I wish there was a cheap way to retrofit the fuel pump.
