First I'd like to say thanks to everyone who responded to my questions regarding Buells. I just picked up an '06 XB12Ss....had to drive to Daytona Beach from Tampa to get it, but it was well worth the trip. I have just a couple of questions though. 1)Is it normal for the fan to come on while riding? 2) The dealer said that the engine oil and tranny fluid are NOT seperate, is this true? I thought they were seperate. 3) When I squeeze the front brake hard, I hear a clicking noise coming from the front wheel, has anyone else experienced this? Thanks and God bless. |

Just got back from 90 miles on my XB9S. Gotta get the riding in while summer lingers... 1)Is it normal for the fan to come on while riding? Yes. The 12 fan comes on more frequently than the 9. But as your XB12 breaks in and when you switch to synthetic oil it will come on much less. Mine rarely if ever comes on while I am riding. 2) The dealer said that the engine oil and tranny fluid are NOT separate, is this true? I thought they were separate. Your dealer probably got mixed up between the Harley big twins and the sportsters. The XB oil is separate from the primary/tranny oil compartment. 3) When I squeeze the front brake hard, I hear a clicking noise coming from the front wheel, has anyone else experienced this? Nothing to worry about. It's all normal, all okay. Enjoy your ride. It doesn't get any better! |

You'll notice some spring loaded tension in the front rotor if you press in on it near a mounting bolt. I believe what happens is that the pads/caliper pull the rotor slightly away from the mounting bolt as that portion of the rotor passes through the caliper. When it moves away from the caliper it lightly "slams" back against the mounting bolt due to the spring tension. As the pads get worn in, this gets quieter. You may also notice a quiet buzz when the brake lever is just barely pulled in (just enough to feel the brakes a tad bit). Both are normal. |

3) When I squeeze the front brake hard, I hear a clicking noise coming from the front wheel, has anyone else experienced this? Depending how much clicking there is, this may mean that your steering head bearing needs to be re-tourqued (per the service manual). If this is the case, you would notice the clicking under light to medium front braking, at relatively slow speeds (say under 25mph). |
