got two choices...both are city x's xb9's with race kits, same color. ones an 04 with 2500 miles for $7200 and ones an 03 with 3100 miles on ebay and not sure what the price is going to be. MY question is, whats the difference in an 03 to an 04 and any opinions on a good price for the 03? opinions welcome thanks everyone!

first off they didn't make the City X bike in 03 or 04.
They came out in 05.

So, I'm thinking you are talking about XB9S bikes.

I am out of XB9S bikes right now but I do have 2, 2005 XB9SX City Cross bikes that I'll sell for 7800.00
Brand new with full 2 year warranty.

The "big" difference between the '03 and '04 will be the belt setup. The '04 had a much stronger belt along with different pulleys and belt guards. The real advantage to the '04+ setup is that the new '06 belt is a direct replacement. You could convert an '03 belt to the '04 setup, but you're looking at $300+ for the conversion.

Other minor differences would be the one-piece throttle body, lower passenger pegs, slightly revised shift lever (not a visible change), and the kickstand.

FWIW, 2004 XB9s were somewhat rare. You might want to double-check the vin just to be sure.

Spike,

I have an 03 Firebolt. Can I convert the pulley system over to the 04 set up with an 06 belt myself, or will I need dealer assistance?

Hey spike, thanks for the info. If I can get the 03 at a good price I may go for it and do the conversion for 300+. I would like the strongest belt I can find. That race kit on the bike sounds so sweet but I feel the o4 for 7200 is overpriced. also thank you dave for the offer. Where are you located and what dealership are you from?

I believe the '04 benefited from larger diameter forks as well.

The bigger forks (43mm) didn't come along until '05. '03-'04 XBs have 41mm forks.

Snackbar- If you're comfortable removing both pulleys and all the belt guards yourself then you should be fine. It's probably a good idea to pick up a service manual and read through the section on removing the pulleys to see if you feel comfortable doing it.

Just a little addition. The 12Scg still retains the 41mm forks. All other models 05-06 as stated above have 43mm.

On edit: not sure why I typed that. It's true & all but the topic was the 9S.

In my defense let me just say "whoops" : )

Carry on

so just to be a pain...do you guys think thats a good deal on an 04 with a race kit? 7200 dollars with 2500 miles? I wanted them to let it go for 6700 and they came down from 7400 to 7200. I bought one bike from them already this year and I feel they can do better...also whats a good price for an 03 with 3100 mile cause its on ebay and I don't want to overbid.

I think between 5000 and 5300 is about right for an 03 XBS with low miles...

You should be able to find low-mileage 2004 XB9S's for less than $6500.

Bought mine from a dealer in March with 3000 miles for $6500 (factory demo).

But don't beat yourself up about the last 2 cents. Once you have the bike you'll be sorry you waited so long. Just my experience talking.

Good luck,

Bill
