Why is it that the XB line doesn't appear to be holding their value like the older tubers? It seems you can easily find an XB for a VERY reasonable price while the older Buells are fetching higher prices than the 03', 04' and sometimes even 05 models.
Almost makes me wish I bought an older (and perhaps more collectable) Buell.

Just an opinion/observation... Some dealers dumped their stock so they could drop the Buell line. Some good prices were available, for the first time buyer that is. Also, you will see different prices in different parts of the country... and you will see different prices during the Spring vs. Fall. And... some think the 9 is the "little" bike, so prices for them are lower... and they are sold new at a lower price. 1000cc is little?

Some tubers get better prices cause there are fewer of them. Exclusive? I think some are. It depends on how bad you want the bike (and that model), I guess.

I think it is due to the fact that when the XB line came out, Harley more or less forced almost all their dealers to take a few Buells, whether they really wanted them or not, in order to absorb the production of the new line, which far exceeded demand, as the new model was an unknown quantity.
Most HD dealers did not really want the line, and very, very few were able or willing to sell them. The fact that they were priced a bit too high didn't help either.
The result was that a very large percentage of the '03 models were sold at or around dealers cost, as many dealers dropped the line all together after one or two seasons, and dumped their stock. I bought one of these, an XB9S, and I think I got one of the best values in motorcycling.
Now that the number of incompetent and unwilling dealers has been dramatically reduced, and the XB line has been so well received by the motoring public and press, I imagine prices will stabilize.
I don't have the figures to hand, but I am under the impression that annual production of XB is rather larger than any tuber year.

I never purchased a motorcycle that I didn't lust for, still have a couple from the 80s that I can't/will not part with. Resale value isn't something I ever thought about when I took them home. I'd rather ride a bike that's KICK ARSE*
(thanks to our Brit brothers across the pond) than to ride an average/boring/me too bike with better resale value. Thought about it with cars and women though.......................there is an old saying that goes something like this, never marry a woman who isn't real good looking because you'll never get someone to take her off your hands, (it has worked all right for me). To me, that's resale value!

Just where is this mysterious land where 'tubers are priced higher than used XB's?????

Do you have any examples of 'tuber prices in your area? Around here it's nearly impossible to get even a glance at a 'tuber priced higher than $3,500.

I disagree. I bought my '98 S3T for $4250 with about 9,500 miles on it. It was showroom condition. Had 2 sets of inner bags, large outer bags, race kit installed(header, muffler, ignition), tires had 50% tread left(207s), came with a new set of D208GP track tires, extra shock, PM Wheels etc...

3 months later, my brother bought another S3T for $3300.


Now, keep in mind, the S3Ts went for $12K new.

So where can I get an XB for $3300 to $4250? : ) My checkbook is open and ready!

Probably not $3300 to $4250 new. But used, yeah. New you might get an XB for $7-$8K if you can find it.

Yup, currently, my local dealer has a deal on XBs, $8900+tax for XB12s and $7400+tax for XB9s.

Simply wander over to Ebay and compare what the prices are for closed auctions. Over the past few weeks that I have been watching the tubers invariabley fetch prices that are very close if not more than some of the much newer XB models.
I'm not saying that you won't find XBs' priced higher but considering the age of the tuber versus the much newer XB it seems that they still fetch a premium price. If I can already buy a "perfect" used XB for $5900.00 it makes me wonder what their price will be when they are as old as the tubers.

I've been seeing a 2000 X1 with a race kit going for $4800 in my paper. $4000 would be more in the ballpark.

Old is relative. 2000 is obviously older than 2003 and up. I assumed that was common sense. It is certainly fairly new compared to a 90' model bike but compared to a 2006? Hardly.
I just checked Ebay today and the tubers still are reaching prices close to if not more than the earlier XB models.
The local cycle traders also support the trend with several tubers starting at $5500.00 and up with one local 2000 model selling for $8000.00 or best offer.
Didn't mean to offend anyone by calling their bike "old". I simply meant old compared to a model several years newer.

i think my carry-over xb 9s was 6500.00 new. any nice tuber around here low mile ect. about 4500.00

I don't see it either here in N. Cali. It seems like the old tubers here go between $3k and $4.5k, while '03xb9's are still getting $6k.

Right now there are several tubers as well as XB models on Ebay. Notice that they are for the most part neck and neck as far as pricing.
I would assume Ebay is nationwide since the ads are from various states so I can't see where geographical areas would make a difference.
My whole point is this. The XB line seems to have plummeted in price for used bikes where as the tubers seem to be holding their own. If they drop so dramatically in just a few years then I feel that it doesn't bode well for their value down the road.

I don't buy a bike for the value (resale).... I buy it cause I like and it makes me happy! I currently have a 98 S1W (relatively few of around) signed by Mr. Buell himself (even fewer around I suspect). The bike has 23,000 miles and climbing. I don't care that the milage goes up, as this is not a museum item. Some people think otherwise and that is their perogative. I say just ride the thing!!

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with my X1.
I just crossed 60K.
No one's ever going to buy it. Most people are scared off by 20K.

The worst thing is, I'm not ready to sell it yet and so by the time I do decide to let it go,
what the hell is the clock going to say then?

I'm probably just stuck with it forever. (like my 78K sportster)

I just realized one need look no further for a decent price comparison than our own classifieds.
I think it illustrates quite nicely the fact that (at least where I have looked) the tubers are holding value better than the XB line.

You are right. They are made to be ridden but unless you plan on keeping the bike for a lifetime then it would be dumb (as in my case) not to research resale value for comparible models/brands.
I recently purchased my 03' XB9R and freakin' LOVE IT! I am so taken back by the Buell brand that I am now looking for an older model as well. This is when I noticed that they cost as much as my bike even though they are as much as 5 years older! Oh well, looks like I won't be getting that tuber anytime soon LOL.

I did not purchase my XB9R with the intent on selling it one day. All I know is that I drooled over it at the dealership and took my whole two weeks pay and slammed it down on the thing. I had to call momma to wire me money to put gas in it. The different posts list average at best used prices for the XBs, but the sort of experiences I've had with it are priceless. Value with no value I guess.

I'd bear in mind that depreciation rates aren't constant, either. Most of the tube-framed bikes are fully depreciated, whereas the XB frames are still new enough to be on the downward slide. Factor in the dumping of '03's as Tunes and Gentleman Jon pointed out above and the XB's values may not be plummeting as badly as it would seem.
